http://nfltraderumors.co/dolphins-have-had-preliminary-contract-talks-with-rb-lamar-miller/ Get it done!
Dolphins are in nowhere near the cap trouble in 2016 that people think. Miller should be extended. He works real hard to improve himself.
I could see this being a tough one so early talks are a good idea. I expect that his agent will focus on his impressive YPC while the Dolphins will focus on how despite his improvement he leads the team in drops and hasn't become the three down back they hoped for.
This is pretty much blogspam. Why not link the source? http://miamiherald.typepad.com/spor...rsity-of-miami-standouts-the-dolphins-de.html A Miller extension is a good thing because he's an advanced stat monster. He does things well that correlate well to offensive success and are highly attributable to individual ability. Vernon is more of a buy low guy for me. Like Odrick, you let him get paid elsewhere and bring in a replacement. I'd prefer if it were a drafted player.
Wouldn't doing it now be the best chance at a pretty big discount? He's only had one year of really good play which followed a disappointing year.
so let's say he blows up and goes for say 1500 rushing and 400 receiving this coming season. you are saying he wouldn't cost more after a season like that?
Even if there is no discount and the price is no discount there is a simple reason to do it now, we can structure the contract so that there is a bigger hit in 2015 than in 2016 making next year easier on our cap management.
That's really not an advantage, because it means you also have less money available. Ultimately I think RBs have such a low value that resigning Miller shouldn't be difficult if Miami wants to keep him. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk
Lamar Miller is not going to make more than 3-$4M/yr. I'm not sure any accounting gymnastics are necessary. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk
I'm a person who likes to have peace of mind. Any player that goes into the offseason unsigned is one I worry will never come back. The fewer of those that we have, the better I'll feel. Add to that the fact that Miller is not only talented, but very young and should have a lot of tread left on his tires, and I want him locked up.
So do I, but locking him up also limits your options next year. Let's say for example that Wake starts off the year strong but fades down the stretch due to age. At the same time OV is having a break out year, what do you do if you have already given Miller a fat long term deal? I'm all for signing him to something team friendly, but unless it's relatively cheap, I don't like the idea of losing both our stud defensive ends in the very near future.
Lamar Miller had one good year - And lest we forget isn't exactly reliable when it comes to balls thrown his way. He is a decent running back and IMO, the Dolphins shouldn't rush to sign him unless they get a significant discount. Let him play out the year or extend him mid season if he shows that he can sustain another year and improves other aspects of his game.
I have already accepted that we cannot have both Wake and Vernon on the team after this year. It'll be one or the other.
Miller is, IMO, probably the third best RB that we've had in the last 30 years or so (after Ricky and Ronnie), and to me, you don't let a young player like that just walk away unless the gap between what he wants and what you're offering is huge. Obviously, we don't know what he and his agent are going to ask for. If they try to get a DeMarco Murray deal, then that's a problem. But I love that the conversations are starting now, and I hope that they're fruitful.
I think I'd rather find a way to keep Wake and Vernon and let Miller walk unless Miller has a ridiculous year and we get very little out of Ajayi
that's under the assumption that his 2015 #'s are similar to last season. I don't personally see Miller getting huge numbers this year if Ajayi plays like we expect him to, so I agree that we should be able to get him for 3-4M/year.
Even with great numbers, Miller is still on the 3-4 range. IIRC, Demarco Murray is making something like $3.5 guaranteed per yr. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk
Milller looks better than the $4m/year range RBs (Spiller, Ingram, Gore etc.) but less than the $7m/year Charles is getting.
Guaranteed only means something once they're cut, and there are way too many different variations on how it's guaranteed.
If Miller raises his ability to break open field tackles from less than 5% to around 20%, he would totally get $4m a year.
