I don't see how it's possible he makes the 53...unless Parker is PUP'd regular season...did we keep 6 last year?

I think it somewhat depends on what happens with Rishard Matthews. He also needs to produce in preseason.

no, Rishard looks like his head is on strait for the year, he's way more talented than Hazel, nice size strength combo, and his hands are as good as anyone on the team..

Has he ever not? I think a lot depends on what they decided to do with him; do you keep him as a 5th (despite his unhappiness) or do you try and trade/cut him and develop a younger guy like Hazel or Christion Jones?

I don't think so. I want to say they kept 5.

We would have incredible depth with Rishard. However, I can sympathize with his situation. Possibly a trade out of conference after preseason. Hopefully for a guard that has as much upside as Rishard...

I would keep him as the fifth, split reps between he and stills, I would also showcase him in the preseason and if someone is willing to give us a 3rd or a 4th so lets talk.

I don't see Stills being that low in the pecking order at WR. And even then, with Jordan Cameron in the fold, I feel like he's going to see plenty of reps split out, in the slot, etc. to where you're probably not even getting your 4th receiver all that many anyway.

I see matthews being able to steal reps from all positions no matter where anyone is in the pecking order..but your question or concern is about whether he's happy..well if he's not happy and still wants to be traded then showcase him, be honest with him, and mos def look for a partner in preseason, if he and Philbin have worked on their relationship and he wants to be a dolphin, id roster him because he's still young and talented.

Just guessing, but for whatever reason, Matthews has been in the doghouse, yet he's produced whenever he's seen the field. He might be a poor practice player, but he's been effective when he's gotten to play. Miami really limited his reps last year.

but how do you sympathize with someone being in the doghouse or being a poor practice player?

I don't get this situation either, from a few accounts he seemed to work hard coming out of college but who knows...he's built like a rock and is very strong..must be meeting stuff

I honestly do not know why Brandon Gibson or Brian Hartline was seeing the field more than Rishard... I think he was our second best receiver for a few years..He just did not get the chance.

That's what I heard. He was late or missed meetings early on. I think he also didn't know his assignments well enough also early on. Philbin just never saw him as professional b/c of it or his demeanor or something like that. I suspect he either isn't or just doesn't come off as a smart guy. IIRC the first game he started, due to injuries, he had 11 for 120 and 2 TDs. But he started a few more games that year and never had more than 5 catches. I don't know why.

well maybe he's grown up, I believe he is a free agent next year.

and thats one thing I back Philbin on, If he didn't have that work ethic then there are no excuses, he should be in the dog house, your not gonna reward talented individuals who play well on game day but don't take their craft serious enough like a pro over someone who gives their all on and off the field..

    culture wins..

If I had to pick Matthews or Hazel, it's Matthews all day regardless of the potential of a guy like Hazel who's yet to do anything special.

Let me put it simply...who do you trust to step up and make a few catches given that our #1 objective is winning? Think of what's on the line this season. Do you really want to put any of it in the hands of Matt Hazel over Rishard Matthews? I don't.

Let's not kid ourselves, we know who the most important guys are. First, there is the 3 amigos; the trio of young WRs we'll watch for several years to come: Landry, Stills and Parker. Jennings and Cameron are temporary weapons but not long-term pieces. That group of 5 has obvious value for us. Those are the KEY receiving weapons. Everyone else is either rotational or supplemental to those 5 primary players.

What we need beyond those 5 is quality depth that can step up in the case of emergency or injury. Right now, Matthews can do that for us and play a valuable role as a back-up. Hazel is not value to the team right now unless he goes off and kills it in camp and preseason. But if things get so bad that we're reliant upon our 5th WR for any amount of production, I want that WR to be game-ready and we all know that Matthews can do that if called upon.

Hazel means nothing to me right now. The goal is to get over the hump this year and that means we need reliable, quality players. Hazel is very unlikely to be a part of that this season.

To clarify, I'd keep Matthews over Hazel or any of the other FAs and UDFAs at WR. I'm just not sure I see a role for him this year, so why not try and move him for something if you can?

I'd keep Hazel over Mathews as the 5th WR. Mathews is playing good soldier now, but once he begins the season as the low man he'll start yapping again.

Hazel is practice squad material. Haven't seen much else from him thus far that would indicate anything else.

If we were to trade Matthews for some reason then I really like Preston as the fifth receiver.

I don't think that Hazel makes it unless there's an injury or Matthews is traded. If he were more talented, I'd keep him over Matthews because he's under contract longer, but Hazel isn't worth that much effort, to me. I think that the most likely scenerio is that we enter 2016 with Parker, Landry and Stills as our top 3, and have entirely new 4 & 5. For 2015 though, we're really solid where we are.

I like Mathews potential but he seems to be his own worst enemy constantly getting himself in the dog house and is a FA at years end. So assuming both Hazel and Mathews play well during training camp, I think you find a trading partner for Mathews and move forward with Hazel.

I'm surprised by the love for Matthews here. I've supported him in the past and some were not big fans of his on other boards. He can be a player for us.

We have a few guys here who are really big Matthews supporters and always have been. I'm ready to be done with him, personally.

If the 49ers haven't already called about Matthews months ago, no other team is going to offer a pick or a substantial player for him.

Philbin likes Hazel and has praised him openly on more than one occasion. We haven't seen much of Hazel because of the former depth chart, but Philbin has seen plenty of him.

I am not sure if we have or not Alex but I would venture to say that there is a strong possibility that we have at some point in the past.
