According to ESPN's Josina Anderson, the Dolphins are one of four teams interested. https://twitter.com/JosinaAnderson/status/572970874166370304
I'd take him with Miller.....or if not to just return kicks keep Landry healthy and concerned with WR.
Depends on price... Not trying to pay $3mil a year for a player with durability issues. Also not the complement we needs in the run game to Miller.
I'd prefer a big power back for the goal line, but Spiller is interesting. I'd rather he go outside the division.
Too injury prone and doesn't fit the team's needs. Need a big back to compliment Miller. He has an injury literally every season.
It's interesting to see we have interest. One thing we really lacked last year with Landry doing returns was explosive plays. Not to say he never had a good return, but we'd all agree Spiller is the faster of the two. We also truly lacked team speed at several positions and RB was one of them. Outside of Miller we had little pace in reserve. Spiller would be a way the Dolphons could bring speed in via several positions. Spiller can create mismatches in the passing game out of two back sets, or provides simply another gear for the offense. The FO could be looking to add more speed overall as a way to maximize Lazor's scheme which of borrowed anything from Philly it should be the desire to have speed on offense. Honestly outside of a few players we were very much a plodding offensive team.
That would give the Dolphins two breakaway threats at running back, one of them (Spiller) an excellent pass-catcher out of the backfield. I'm all for it. Playmakers on offense win games.
I abolutely agree with Cons post.If Wallace is retained you can imagine the mismatches that could be created by adding another speedster to the offense .Which one to defend.Nightmare scenario for defenses .If too many resources are used to defend them it will open things up for Landry and our RBs.
Word is Spiller turned down $4.5 million a year contract from the Bills. Don't want to pay any where near that for a complimentary role player who is injury prone.
I want Spiller on this team, but it has to be realistic. If he wants to earn more than 4 million a year, it should either be with an incentive-laden deal or go somewhere else.
In some ways he doesn't fulfill the most pressing need at RB - which is a power back who can alternate with Miller. His raw speed is intriguing and his pass catching abilities as a 3rd down back. But, he will likely cost too much. They still need a Moreno type power back who can block ( take away the injuries to Moreno and Albert last year and the Dolphins are probably drafting in the low 20's). But I'd also be happy with a rookie like Ajayi as the power alternative.
I don't see why we can't do both. Have Miller + Spiller + Rookie power back as our 3 RBs every weekend. that would leave Damien Williams out with Thomas already gone, I don't think we miss either of them.
Main reason = $$$$Money$$$ We are already strapped for cash at this point with Major Needs at OG/DT/ILB/WR/CB/FS .... If we are going to take a run at Suh that will take up a lot fo that money created. There is zero way for us to address all those needs via draft by finding starters so we need to find some in FA, I do believe DT will be addressed via FA and CB. The others could be up in the air in terms of FA or Draft. After hearing he turned down $4.5mil a year hahahaha not a shot. The only back in FA that I would pay that much is Murray and he is going to make much more than that. Not a good formula to spend that much on a utility player like Spiller as he can't be relied upon as a workhorse, and we have a good Kick Returner in Landry he was 3rd in the league. No reason to overspend at RB when Miller is > than Spiller as a RB and they are similar home run threats. I loved what I saw of Damien Williams and would love us to find a mid round power back or mid level vet to add to the group.
Ideally, I would love to see someone as electric as Spiller in a Dolphins uniform, but this coaching staff has proven that they are incredibly good at completely wasting unique football talent. Unfortunately, CJ Spiller has no place on a team coached by Joe Philbin.
I don't think he'll end up at more than 2.75 - 3.25 a year IMHO as his reputation is known and the league doesn't value backs much anyways especially given the crop coming out this year. Reality will sink in soon enough and he will take less than he's asking in the end. Just my two cents given the lay of the land.
No thanks.... Has Spiller ever played a full season? (In MarchHi CJ Spiller, Welcome To Miami.... Week 4 of Regular SeasonBye Cj Spiller, good luck in rehab!
Spiller could give us a dynamic PR/KR game and serve as a 3rd down back. For the right price I'd be down for it.
Problem is Dolphins can't really afford to get into the FA war over RBs. Their money is tight as it is, the least they should do is pay RBs in today's NFL. Spiller would give them another really nice dynamic weapon, but I just don't know how viable it is to get him. With plenty of sh*tty teams having a boatload of money to spend, you best believe prices for FAs will be soaring. Best save the money to compete with prices for bigger needs. Spiller might be able to get $4M+ on this season's FA market.
Id like to pick him up, I think we could use him in the passing game and on special teams, he's a versatile player. Buffalo has had a really crappy offense, I think in the right system with a good Qb he could be a really good player. He is a homerun threat with the ball and a very good return guy, I'd rather have Spiller on return duty than Landry.
Agreed. He may get 4+ but what's the harm in showing interest? There are a lot of FA RBs out there and teams will be low balling them hoping to get a bargain.
I like the idea of bringing a guy like Spiller in at the right price. He's a guy who has flashed explosive talent who will be hungry after getting jettisoned for the sexier RB. Put that altogether and you get a guy with explosive talent who has been spurned by a division rival that will get 2 cracks at revenge against them twice a year.
No harm at all. If they can get him for a moderate price, then go for it. He'd be a nice player for us. Heck, he might even feel like sticking it to the Bills and sign with us for cheaper.
Yes he has. Games played in his five seasons are 14, 16, 16, 15, and 9. The last season was when he broke his collarbone as I recall.
I want spiller for two reasons. One, I know he is injury prone, but he is a DYNAMIC player. These are the guys you need to take a risk on from time to time. Two, I greatly fear he becomes a patriot. I believe the McCoy move pissed him off and he wants to take it out on the Bills.
I suspect the Eagles make a play for him. He'd do well in Chip's offense. Basically the Eagles would gain he and Alonso for McCoy.
