Fellas, with the news of Hartline being cut today and Wallace declining pay cut and on the market, this unit will look extremely different next year. Hartline was a solid player for us but not worth money nor a fit in the scheme. I believe we can replace him quite easily this offseason, also think Matthews is capable of putting in same producgtion as Hartline in case of emergencies.

Regardless, your feeling of Wallace he will be missed if/when he is gone, no doubt about that. Doesn't mean we can't find a suitable replacement or better pieces to fit the puzzle.

    What we need:
    1. Red Zone Threat
    2. Speed
    3. YAC

We have NOT had a WR that is capable of all three nor a complete unit. The draft is loaded with talent and FA should have good options.

    • First, I am against spending ridiculous money in FA, but for right price have no problem addressing a need and improving that route.
    • I do think we need to use draft to get better at WR, and I think it needs to be pick #14.
    • I do want us to resign Clay/Odrick and address OG in FA with Boling/Franklin type.
    • There are 5 possibly 6 capable first round WR's : Cooper, White, Parker, Strong, DGB, and now hearing Perriman.
    • White is a freak and will be first then Cooper, and I wouldn't be surprised if Parker as well. DGB's talent alone he should be Top 10 but he brings baggage. Strong is also a talented player who some say suffered from poor QB play. I think Strong is a great pairing with Tannehill as well if you look at those needs he brings those. Not a burner but for a 6'2" with 42 inch Vertical, I'll take a 4.45 40yd dash any day
    • With that said I do think we will take a look at Free Agency after the WR purge has come and gone.

I think Dez, D. Thomas, and Maclin return to their teams. Maybe even Cobb as well, but think he'll hit the market. Cobb would be a great fit for this team except I know the Raiders will offer him close to $10mil a year and we can't afford that nor do I think he is worth that.

What I'd look for is a younger veteran who can come in an work on the outside. Landry is a budding star in the Slot, draft a physical and talented WR in round 1 and add a veteran for RT17.

Out of this group who would your choice be and why:
    • Torrey Smith
    • Michael Crabtree
    • Kenny Britt
    • Hakeem Nicks
    • Cecil Shorts
    • Eddie Royal
    • Mike Williams
    • Leanard Hankerson
    • Jacoby Jones

I keep on hearing Crabtree would be a good fit... I don't know what kind of money he would be asking for.

    Randall Cobb.

High efficiency (10.2 yards per target), 4th in the league in YAC among WRs, and 3rd in the league among WRs in plays of 20+ yards.

All of those things are what this offense needs from the WR position. Landry can move outside and take over the role Hartline had in 2014, while Cobb occupies the slot.

I doubt Torrey Smith makes it to market. Randall Cobb seems poised to explore offers but Smith I would still forecast to stay put.

If anyone says Hakeem Nicks I think you should be Auto-Banned...Crabtree intrigues me the most, we have a WR that could be better than people think and would fair pretty good in this system. I certainly am not opposed to offering him 4-5M and taking a chance he realizes his potential.

Cobb's great but I'd much rather have a diverse unit than one comprised of Slot WR's. Not doubting Landry's ability on the outside but nothing's a given and we need a physical Wide Receiver.

I really like Cecil Shorts as a player. He can be an impact guy if he's on the field, and he's not a full-time must-play slot guy like Cobb who would push Landry outside full-time.

Torrey Smith would be my pick off the list, but like CK said, I doubt he gets to market.

I still have my doubts about Cobb switching teams. I think he could explore offers, bring them back to Green Bay, and they'll up their offer and he'll stay put. Can't get much better job security than being Aaron Rodgers' favorite wide receiver.

I think Cecil Shorts is your best bet from the ones actually likely to make it to market and switch teams.

Cat-quick inside guy (slot) that also has the pure speed to go deep on the outside.

Have you seen the lack of ability to convert in the Red Zone.....? That's why. The tallest WR Tannehill has had in his 3 years is Hartline at 6'2", and noone can say Hartline is an aerial WR. The benefit of adding a big body WR who is physical (don't get that confused with a slow type) would be huge for our QB and Offense.

I could never imagine Cobb leaving GB for a team like Jax as some teams have rumored today. I do think Oakland will throw a heap load of Money at him but hope the kid is smart enough to realize the QB and continued success he'd be walking away from.

Shorts wouldn't be bad either could see him as a target if Wallace left.

If you're Miami, you hope that Randall Cobb and Torrey Smith do make it to market, and also if you release or trade Mike Wallace you hope it's to a team picking in the Top 12.

If enough teams in the Top 12 end up with a big receiver signing or trade in free agency then that will drop Amari Cooper lower, to where Miami could trade up and get him. And I do think they will want to do that.

The Dolphins haven't done significantly more poorly at scoring touchdowns in red zone opportunities than the average team in the league in either 2013 or 2014.

Guess which team led the league in that area in 2014? Oakland.

I've never seen any objective support for the idea that having a bigger or more physical receiver equals a better team performance in the red zone in terms of touchdowns. Is anyone aware of any, or are we dealing with something that simply sounds good in theory, yet whose truth in reality we have no idea about?

Cooper, Landry, and Cobb would make a huge difference in the passing offense in my opinion.

And if Julian Edelman can play outside in a similar offense to the tune of 197 catches, over 2,000 yards, and 10 TDs over the past two seasons, I have little doubt that Jarvis Landry can produce in that role somewhere along those lines.

I really don't know that they're going to get Cobb.

I think they rate him as a great target but when they make their offer I bet it's going to be an offer that won't blow him away and Miami may not even end up in his top couple of teams.

    CK,

What are your thoughts on the Raiders. Not just b/c Mike is fast but of course it helps. They have a need at WR which is obvious, they have a significant amount of money so the contract wouldn't be a huge issue, IMO.

Trade him for a 5th, lessens the Raiders need to draft WR in round 1. Could ultimately push Cooper into our conversation which, would be fantastic.

Kenny Britt intrigues me a lot as a value pickup. good size. His average has dropped over the last 3 years, but he's had diddly squat throwing to him.

Sorry, I'm really not following your argument in this case. We were 21st in the league in TD efficiency in the Red Zone.... that is not good.

In terms of Oakland, I don't pay attention to them to know why they were number 1 but I do know they added a Red Zone specialist in James Jones probably helped.

I'm sorry if you don't view a Physical or Bigger WR as being more effective in red zone than a smaller type WR, you must not watch our WR's struggles in the RZ.

We have not had a WR who can win a jump ball or master a back shoulder... we need that.

Cleveland and perhaps STL will be chomping at the bits aswell for a solid WR.

None of the above. Instead Ross needs to sit down with his head coach and tell him he needs to do his job. Part of that job is dealing with issues on the team between players and the solution doesn't always have to be getting rid of the best player at the position.

It is about time Philbin grows a pair and brings in Wallace and Tannehill and explains to each of them that they need to work out their issues because they are both going to be members of this team during the coming season.

Wallace is better than any of the WR's you listed as possibilities and it makes no sense to cut a better receiver and then go out and overpay a receiver who is not as good as Wallace.

I blame this entire situation on Philbin and his inability to deal with players who don't fit into his perfect little world. Philbin might be decent as a Sunday school teacher, but as an NFL head coach, he is in over his head.

Amari Cooper and Rashad Greene are two WR's I want us to draft, but we don't know if that will happen or not.

As for this topic, i'd have to go with Cecil Shorts off of that list....He wouldn't cost a lot, yet he is a very productive player even when crappy QB's are throwing to him, so with Tannehill and the dink and dunk game that we run, he would be very valuable.

On a side note, we really need to try and make this work with Mike Wallace. Why on earth sign him if Ryan Tannehill can't throw deep? If the idea was to dink and dunk our way down the field, why sign him? That's what I don't understand. Philbin is an idiot, and there is no denying that.

First thing I would do at the beginning of the league year is sign Jordan Cameron and I wouldn't even bother calling him a TE. I would put him on the depth chart as a receiver.

Second, I would expect Matt Hazel to make the 53 this year.

Third,Draft an athletic WR with strong RAC and a large catch radius would be a plus.

Shorts has Victor Cruz potential if he A) has a quarterback, and B) stays healthy. I've always thought he and Cruz have that similar ability to separate working over the middle but also burn you over the top or create with some RAC. Some of the few big explosive play guys from the slot (including Cobb in that group as well). They're talented.

I agree with you on Wallace, sorta. Have to make it work. Elite speed, highest ypc, touchdowns, and he affects a defense...that's difficult to replace. And now that you cut the other guys, I mean how much turnover can you really have while you're still bringing your QB along? At this point I could deal with Wallace-Landry-Mathews-Shorts-Clay-draft. That's not half bad. (Not into Parker or Strong at 14, though, I should add.)

They were still within the average range, however, and there is so little variation in that stat, that a mere two more red zone touchdowns on the season -- one every eight games -- would've made them 14th in the league.

Cobbs is whom I most want. I could see us looking for 2 replacement WRs for Hartline and Gibson being both versatile enough to play effectively outside or in the slot. Cobbs would be the first one, and then draft another.
