Don't mind me, I just need a place to put my stats and ramblings to prepare for semi-interesting articles for the 2015 GML.

A Look Back At The Draft Steals

Looking back at the last five years of the GML, we as GMs always wonder who really had the best draft, or best free agency class. Well in this series of retrospectives, I have decided to see if we in fact awarded the right pick.

When picking the Draft Steal, most time we award the GM with a pick based on the value of the real NFL. It’s how we have the likes of Jake Locker walking away with the Draft Steal award, simply because he was drafted in the top ten of the first round in the real NFL Draft. Why do we reward our GML picks based on over drafting by real NFL GMs?

Our only rules are that the player must have been drafted behind where they were actually drafted. So no, drafting Colin Kaepernick or Russell Wilson in the third round in the GML will not qualify.

Well, let’s take a look and see if we can figure out who the real GML Draft Steal was…

2010 Draft Steal of the year:
The Pick: Ryan Matthews - Buffalo Bills [dukane5/Silverphin]
Drafted Round 2, #49 Overall in the GML
Drafted Round 1, #12 Overall in the GML

    Career Stats
Year Games Played Games Started Rushing Yards TDs
    2010 12 9 678 7
    2011 14 14 1091 6
    2012 12 9 707 1
    2014 16 15 1255 6

As we can see the Lord of No Rings drafted Ryan Matthews 12th overall in the 2010 Draft, while he went 49th overall to the Buffalo Bills which happens to be more than a full round of value. However Ryan Matthews hasn’t established himself as a premiere running back in the league, as he has had health issues early in his career and only broke a thousand yards twice in four years. However he may be turning a corner after finally playing in 16 games for the first time in his career.

The Real Steal: Lamarr Houston – Pittsburgh Steelers [sports24/7]
    Drafted Round 4, #114 Overall
    Drafted Round 2, #044 Overall

    Career Stats:
Year Games Played Games Started Tackles Sacks
    2010 16 15 39 5
    2011 16 13 51 1
    2012 16 16 69 4.5
    2013 16 16 69 6

Alternatively, my pick would have to be Lamarr Houston who happened to have played in all 64 career games and starting all but 4 of them. Houston has collected 16.5 sacks and just signed a $35 million contract with the Bears, a valuable defensive lineman, Houston easily beats out Matthews as the real 2010 Draft Steal. Other picks for the real draft steal include S TJ Ward who was also taken in the fourth round of the GML by the Green Bay Packers, other running backs like Toby Gerhart and Ben Tate didn’t count because they were drafted closely to where they were actually selected and their body of work is too small. Given another year and Eric Decker could leap frog all the players here.

2011 Draft Steal of the year:
The Pick: Jake Locker – Minnesota Vikings [schisno]
Drafted Round 2, #45 Overall in the GML
Drafted Round 1, #08 Overall in the NFL

    Career Stats:
Year Games Played Games Started Passing Yards TDs INTs
    2011 5 0 542 4 0
    2012 11 11 2176 10 11
    2013 7 7 1256 8 4

This is a case of real NFL draft position affecting the real value of the player. Jake Locker has shown flashes but has yet to be healthy for a full season and has not come close to the production expected of a top ten pick. Then again this was a weak year for quarterbacks in the first round, especially with the likes of Colin Kaepernick being drafted in the third round. Jake Locker has to be considered a bust, even with where he was drafted in the GML, but he’s still no John Beck.

Real Steal: Andy Dalton – Baltimore Ravens [Skeet84]
Drafted Round 3, #92 Overall in the GML
Drafted Round 2, #35 Overall in the NFL

    Career Stats:
Year Games Played Games Started Passing yards TDs INTs
    2011 16 16 3398 20 13
    2012 16 16 3669 27 16
    2013 16 16 4293 33 20

There is talk about Andy Dalton holding back the Bengals, but in terms of draft value here in the GML he has been the best value in the 2011 Draft, especially with the numbers in comparison to quarterbacks drafted in the first round and with the fact that he’s starter every game of his career thus far and that full round value the Ravens got can be multipled and argued that Dalton is one of a few first round level quarterbacks.

Other picks include DT Phil Taylor who was drafted in the second round in the GML, another player who was up for the title of draft steal was James Carpenter, who was a first round pick of the Seahawks in the NFL but a third round pick in the GML. Unfortunately the James Carpenter pick hasn’t played up to a level that we can describe as a steal for an offensive tackle. Especially when there have been many other lineman from the draft class who has outplayed him.

2012 Draft Steal of the year:
The Pick: Mark Barron – Tennessee Titans [Paul_13]
Drafted Round 1, #32 Overall in the GML
Drafted Round 1, #07 Overall in the NFL

How much of a steal is a player if he’s drafted in the same round? Does a top ten player being drafted at the end of the first count? What if Aaron Curry or Vernon Gholston slipped to the later part of the first round?

Not to say Mark Barron is a bust like either of those two, instead he has been a really solid safety for the Buccaneers and will continue to develop. However there are other players who have showed just slightly better value in terms of draft placement, No, not Harrison Smith.

    Career Stats
Year Games Played Games Started Tackles Sacks INTs
    2012 16 16 88 0 1
    2013 14 14 88 2 2

Real Steal: Chandler Jones – New York Jets [schisno]
Drafted Round 3, #66 Overall in the GML
Drafted Round 1, #21 Overall in the NFL

The real draft steal in this case happens to be Chandler Jones who was stolen by the New York Jets in the third round, but drafted by AFC East Rival New England in the first round. Jones has developed into a great defensive end and hit double digit sack totals this past season. One of the reasons for the rise in defensive play in New England, Jones is a strong part and worth more than his GML draft positions.

    Career Stats
Year Games Played Games Started Tackles Sacks
    2012 14 13 45 6
    2013 16 16 79 11.5

2013 Draft Steal of the year:
The Pick: DJ Hayden – Miami Dolphins [GridIronKing34]
Drafted Round 3, #85 Overall in the GML
Drafted Round 1, #12 Overall in the NFL

Another case of NFL draft placement making a certain player look more valuable than he is, DJ Hayden was taken a little early by the Oakland Raiders but has been out played by the likes of third rounder Logan Ryan. You’ve got to play more than 8 games as a 12th overall pick, the 25 tackles and 1 forced fumble and 1 interception is an ok start.

    Career Stats
Year Games Played Games Started Tackles Sacks INTs
    2013 8 2 25 0 1

Real Steal: Kiko Alonso – Miami Dolphins [GridIronKing34]
Drafted Round 3, #96 Overall in the GML
Drafted Round 2, #46 Overall in the NFL

The Miami Dolphins still have the 2013 NFL Draft Steal, it just happens to be the wrong player because he wasn’t a first round pick, even though he’s been playing like one all year. Kiko Alonso won the Pro Football Weekly defensive rookie of the year award. This is also a toss up because you can put the Associated Press defensive rookie of the year Sheldon Richardson here as well, however as a GML third round pick he’s definitely played pass his second round selection and would be a top ten pick if there was a redraft.

Looking Back At Free Agent Steal of the Year

What makes a free agent a steal? Of course past production plays into, but you’re not paying money for what they did in the past, instead you want to use your analytical skills and find underappreciated gems who will out produce high price free agents. In a salary cap world you have to be smart and can’t throw money around if you’re going to compete for the long term.

Some GMs will be seduced by a big name who went slightly below what they expected, but how closely do they look at age and production that’s left? Of course not all players in their prime will be worth that big deal, and not all minimum contracts will be a boon… heck, they can just end up a JAG.

2010 Free Agent Steal of the Year
DE Adewale Ogunleye $300,000 – Denver Broncos [NickyNapolean]

Back in 2010 the Salary Cap was set at a paltry $58,000,000 and some of the biggest contracts were between the $5,000,000 to $8,000,000 and then you had some frachise players like Peyton Manning who was worth a modest $14,000,000.

The contract minimum was set to $300,000 and that is where we found our Free Agent Steal of the Year, he had a been a strong player and productive defensive end for both the Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears, however was Adewale Ogunleye worth his contract? Hardly, the Houston Texans picked him up and were able to squeeze out 4 games with no starts and just 2 tackles, if there was ever a JAG in 2010 it was our Free Agent Steal of the Year.

Of course not all the GMs thought that way back in 2010, as noted by famed Miami fan and I believe owner of an Ogunleye jersey…

Schisno’s 2010 Free Agent Steal of the Year:
LB Stephen Tulloch $1,250,000 – Tennessee Titans [Biggtyme13]

I want you to understand something, Demeco Ryans and Shawne Merriman got contracts worth over $5,000,000 in the GML this year and both played a total of 6 games and 3 games respectively. Scott Fujita who got slightly more than Stephen Tulloch, and played in only 9 games. That’s a lot of money for a player to sit out. However Stephen Tulloch went and had a career high in tackles with 160 and added 1 sack, 1 INT starting all 16 games in 2012 and remains one of the best tackling machines in the league. You know who else got paid more than Tulloch? Ryan Pickett at $7,000,000 and OJ Atogwe at $8,000,000 and 2010 was his last solid year before washing out with Washington.

Other notable free agents were Rocky McIntosh who earned the same $1,250,000 for 110 tackles, and Derrick Mason who made $1,000,000 for over 800 receiving yards and 7 TDs.

We still do not agree with Paul_13 voting for Charlie Whitehurst and his $300,000 contract as a steal either.

2011 Free Agent Steal of the Year
OT Vernon Carey $1,100,000 – San Francisco [Alen1]

In 2011 the Salary Cap was set at $75,000,000 and Vernon Carey was part of the 22nd worst offensive line in 2011 and had a grade of (-4.1) according to PFF. Hardly an endorsement for free agent steal of the year, then again it’s a second year in a row we have a Dolphin/Former Dolphin with the nod. Granted it is harder to grade a lineman as a free agent steal. In 2011 Bobbie Williams was a top 50 offensive lineman according to Bleacher Report and went for the GML minimum of $300,000, so you can see the kind of value you can find at lineman. Also the fact that Vernon Carey was had for $450,000, tells me all I need to know.

Schisno’s 2011 Free Agent Steal of the Year
LB Daryl Smith $1,000,000 – Denver Broncos [GridIronKing34]

It was hard to find a solid steal in free agency this year as most big names continue to go for big money. However I land back at another linebacker, another very solid player in Daryl Smith who managed 107 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 1 INT and 2 FFs and although he missed the majority of 2012, he bounced back in 2013 with a very good year. Most players who received minimum contracts like Clinton Portis never played in 2011, or other big names like Randy Moss who received $2,500,000 never saw the field in 2011 either. There was a lot of wasted money. How Charlie Whitehurst got $1,500,000 I will never know.

2012 Free Agent Steal of the Year
DT Paul Soliai, $3,200,000 - Pittsburgh Steelers [Boik14]

Paul Soliai is a solid run defender up the middle and the $3,200,000 is a modest contract, but there were other players of similar value in 2012 like Sione Pouha. Other solid players included Adam Carriker who got $1,200,000 himself. Most grades given to Soliai around this time were a B. So the investment was good for the value, and a lot of what he does won’t show up on the stat sheets.

Schisno’s 2012 Free Agent Steal of the Year
RB Marshawn Lynch $5,400,000 – Pittsburgh Steelers [Boik14]

I think the best value and the actual Free Agent Steal for 2012 was Marshawn Lynch, I know $5,400,000 seems like a steep price for a steal but look at what Lynch was able to accomplished in 2012, 3rd in Rushing with 1590 yards, 5th in rushing TDs with 11, a Pro Bowl appearance as an alternate and an All Pro voting. Contrast that with Michael Bush receiving $5,000,000 from Oakland and Benjarvis Green-Ellis commanded $3,800,000.

Honestly it was surprising to see how a top tier running back like that even enter free agency, then again Seattle decided they had to franchise David Hawthorne for over $9,000,000… he of 10 games in 2012. Even Peyton Hillis was transitioned for over $6,000,000. Though the Bills were just a year early on Jordan Cameron who they won for $550,000 after he was cut, then again 200 yards receiving doesn’t make that contract as palatable. I'll give a shout out to sports24/7 and his $16,000,000 contract to Marques Colston.

Top 10 Highest Paid Free Agent Defensive Backs GML (2010-2014)

Along with Wide Receiver, Defensive Backs have been highly prized free agents, but do they get paid on par with their offensive counter parts?

Here's a quick snap shot of the Top 10-11 highest paid DBs, and what percentage of the cap they took up. As you can see there has been a steady decline in DB contracts over the years. Interestingly enough Carlos Rogers has been a free agent three times and initial went from 4% of the cap (2011) to 10% of the cap (2012) back down to 6% of the cap (2014). Percentage wise Courtland Finnegan has had the biggest contract at 18% (2012), which is only 5% less than this years biggest contract paid out to Jimmy Graham at $30,000,000 which only accounts for 23% of the salary cap (2014).

In terms of contracts Peyton Manning is still untouchable at 39% of the salary cap (2011) when he was paid $29,000,000 of a possible $75,000,000 cap.

Top 10 Highest Paid Free Agent Wide Receivers GML (2010-2014)

Wide receiver is a marquee position and highly regarded in the GML, but how does it really compare to their defensive counterparts? When looking at the defensive backs we can see a decline in spending for cornerbacks and safeties but it's even more apparent that the wide receiver position isn't as sought after as believed. The main reason being that most of the marquee names are locked with a Franchise Tag and don't make it to free agency, of course when they do we see outliers that aren't usually expected, as in the case of Marques Colston (2012) when he accounted for 19% of the $85,000,000 salary cap, beating out Coutrland Finnegan by a mere $500,000 in salary.

Then there was Mike Wallace (2013), who even earning $21,500,000 just hit a mere 17% of the salary cap and so far has the fifth highest cap hit discussed in our series. The biggest difference between the top ten receivers vs the top ten defensive backs is how top heavy free agents are paid at the receiver position, as evident by the fiscally responsible 1% cap hit floor.

Historically no one is willing to bid on a franchised receiver but one player did get a transitional tag; Antonio Bryant (2010) was won with a $7,000,000 bid. Not since have we seen a transitioned receiver. Another interesting fact is that Malcolm Floyd and Braylon Edwards have been a top five earners two years in a row (2010-2011). In 2014 we included team re-resignings (Dexter McCluster, Riley Cooper, Golden Tate) otherwise the contract floor would be a mere 1%, already lowering a historically bad year for receivers in the GML.

Top 10 Highest Paid Free Agent Running Backs GML (2010-2014)

Once a premiere position, Running Backs have fallen on hard times. It's so bad that you can find free agent punters with equal salaries in certain years. Six to ten years ago this would have been a marquee position but with the way most NFL teams have found starters in UDFA or later in the draft, most teams aren't will to spend money on running backs, it also suffers a great deal from the biggest names being franchise tagged as well.

Though Arian Foster was franchised (2012) after being tendered the previous two years, the Houston Texans wouldn't allow him to walk to the New York Jets for a $9,000,000 contract and picks #32, #95 in exchange, hence the reason Arian Foster is in our top paid free agents list as he nearly walked away from his team. Of course this is the only time a franchise tagged running back was bid on.

However this year the Green Bay Packers declined to match a free agent offer on James Starks by the Baltimore Ravens and see him switch conferences for a paltry $900,000. Overall the running backs are a forgotten group with most GMs looking to the draft for their starters.

I just want to say that Marion Barber was coming off a 2010 campaign of 374 rush yards and 4 TDs to earn that $6,000,000 contract for 2011, of course in 2011 he would rush for 422 yards and 6 TDs.

Of course for 2012 he got $500,000 not to play.

Then if you look at Ahmad Bradshaw who made a million less at $5,000,000 which he earned after finishing 2010 off with 1,235 rush yards and 8 TDs and losing 6 of 7 fumbles. What did that $5,000,000 earn you? 659 rush yards and 9 TDs.

Of course he earned $5,000,000 in salary but was close to half the cap% hit after coming off a 1,015 yards and 6 TD campaign. What did the $5,000,000 get you in 2013? 186 rush yards and 2 TDs.

Meanwhile Larry Johnson in 2010 got you 2 rush yards on 5 attempts for $2,000,000.

Of course Reggie Bush as the only other RB to earn top 5 FA contracts twice compared to Ahmad Bradshaw, was the best bargain... just look at the stats

    Reggie Bush
    2011 - GML FA Contract: $3,500,000 (6% cap hit)
1,086 Rush Yards and 6 Rush TDs; 296 receiving yards and 1 reception TD

    2013 - GML FA Contract: $4,000,000 (3% cap hit)
1,006 Rush Yards and 4 Rush TDs; 506 receiving yards and 3 reception TDs

So I was looking at doing a "Who Really Had The Best FA" piece and currently auditing Griddles voting here, I see some an error or two some five years later.

2010 Best In Free Agency: Boik14

However looking at the records of voting I can see that we didn't have a particular set of finalists as we do now in the current system. What we may have had was a system similar to what we do for GM of the Year with each GM voting for their top three picks, with number one earning 3 pts, two earning 2 pts and three earning 1 pt.

What happened during voting was 9 out of 14 voters only voted for 1 team, whereas the other 5 voted for their top three. Here is how the votes broke down if we went by the top three voting system...

    1. Jacksonville (PSG) 3 + 1 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 13

    2. Indianapolis (Boik14) 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12

    3. Washington (Skull Destroyer) 2 + 1 + 3 + 2 = 8

    4. New England (GridIronKing34/Schisno) 1+3 +1 = 5

    Tied:
    5. San Francisco (B. Sebo) 3
    5. Cleveland (Fin-Omenal) 3
    5. Philadelphia (Gish/GAP) 3
    5. Green Bay (PeaTearGriffin) 3

    Tied:
    6. Buffalo (Silverphin) 2
    6. Tampa Bay (Vengeful Odin) 2
    6. St Louis (Big E) 2

    7. Pittsburgh (Sports24/7) 1

As you can see PSG won the 2010 Best In Free Agency by a mere point. However if you only take the top vote as the only vote, here is how the voting would have looked...

    Tied:
    1. Jacksonville (PSG) 4
    1. Indianapolis (Boik14) 4

    Tied:
    2. Washington (Skull Destroyer) 1
    2. New England (GridIronKing34/Schisno) 1
    2. San Francisco (B. Sebo) 1
    2. Cleveland (Fin-Omenal) 1
    2. Philadelphia (Gish/GAP) 1
    2. Green Bay (PeaTearGriffin) 1

As you can see PSG and Boik would have shared the 2010 Best In Free Agency Award. This is not diminished anyone's accomplishments but to give credit to PSG for at the very least sharing the Best In Free Agency Award.

However, I must investigate and see who really had the best Free Agent Class in 2010.

Top 10 Highest Paid Free Agent Quarterbacks GML (2010-2014)

We've looked at how devalued wide receiver and running back free agents have become since the 2010 offseason but neither of those offensive positions can touch the lack of big money contracts that free agent quarterbacks are given. The most important position in all of football is the highest paid position for good reason, but not when it comes to free agency because you don't see talented pivots in their prime, instead you have journeyman types, or those highly touted first rounders who flamed out and second tier starters. Can you win a Super Bowl with a free agent quarterback? It's been done with the likes of Kurt Warner, Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson and Drew Brees. However that's only 4 out of 30 teams in Super Bowls since 2000 that have won, and only 7 of those 30 teams have had free agent quarterbacks lead them to the title game with Kurt Warner, Jake Delhomme and Peyton Manning all losing in their respective Super Bowls.

With free agent quarterbacks rarely leading their teams to the Super Bowl and going 4-3, it's not a good bet to see one lead their GML team to a big win.

However there have been two noticeable names to have hit free agency (sort of...) In 2010 Jay Cutler was the marquee name in QB free agency and predictably earned the biggest contract and accounted for 15% of the total $58,000,000 salary cap. Was it worth it?

Jay Cutler 2010 GML Contract: $8,500,000 (15% of Cap Space)
    2010 Stats:

    15 Games Started - 3274 Passing Yards - 24 Passing TDs - 16 Interceptions - 232 Rush Yards - 1 Rush TD - 10 Fumbles - 6 Lost Fumbles

Cutler would also lead the Bears to an 11-5 regular season record and the NFC North Division title. The Bears would then defeat the 7-9 Seattle Seahawks in the playoffs before losing to the Green Bay Packers 21-14 in the NFC Conference game, so clearly we can see the $8,500,000 contract paid out in free agency was probably one of the best... especially compared to the one given out in 2011...

    The 2011 GML Offseason

Many were anticipating a historic offseason with Peyton Manning's impending free agency, little did we know what was going to occur. Natural the GML follows the course of the NFL and base their current contracts on the NFL's. Enter Peyton Manning without a contract extension and one GM PSG with only one option... franchise tag the best QB in the NFL. Lose Peyton Manning to free agency? Would there be anyone willing to give up a first and third rounder for Manning?

There happen to be one in particular, Gish, GM of the rival Tennessee Titans who put in a bid of $36,000,000 on the tagged Peyton Manning. PSG was left with a dilemna, match or let him walk for a first and third rounder? Clearly it wasn't enough in return and the bid was matched, but the Colts would trade Manning to the Titans for #27 Overall and Russell Okung. Happy ending for both sides?

    The Bidding War

Then Gish had the smart idea to release Peyton Manning from his $36,000,000 and pick him up for a smaller contract. This would lead to the revise rules of "Franchise Tagged Players may not be cut" in 2012. The Exclusive Franchise Tag wasn't created because of this, instead that was the New York Jets constantly trading down their picks to the lowest possible compensation for Arian Foster and the Houston Texans in 2012.

Gish wasn't lucky enough to get the bargain he was looking for, instead the Minnesota Vikings GM (schisno) entered into a bidding war with the Titans and had Gish surrendering at $30,000,000 until the commissioners office found some accounting errors in Minnesota and Gish was awarded Peyton Manning for $29,000,000. Whether you regard the $36,000,000 or $29,000,000 as the biggest GML contract, know that Peyton Manning took up 36% or 48% of the Titans salary cap.

    Was it worth it?

For $29,000,000 the Titans received 0 Games played from Peyton Manning as he had to have neck surgery. Historically this is the worst contract ever given here in the GML, three times I might add (Titans/Colts, Vikings, Titans).

Meanwhile the Colts signed Matt Hasselbeck (Who had signed with the Titans in real life) to a modest $6,000,000 contract and received:

    Matt Hasselbeck 2011 stats:
    16 Games Started - 3,571 Passing Yards - 18 Passing TDs - 14 Interceptions

Not close to the Cutler deal from 2010, but it was the best production from any of the 2011 Free Agent quarterbacks.

    2012 GML Offseason

There was nothing exciting about 2012, Matt Flynn was the hottest name on the market and received the biggest contract and would wind up playing in 3 games for the Seahawks and passing for 58 yards, losing out on the starting job to Russell Wilson. Not really worth the $7,500,000 (9% cap hit), but Alex Smith didn't do much better as he started 9 games before losing his job to injury and Colin Kapernick.

In fact Ryan Fitzpatrick was the best deal in both 2012 and 2013 as the 4th highest paid free agent quarterback, outplaying the top 3 including Matt Flynn twice.

    Ryan Fitzpatrick GML Contract: 2012 - $1,700,000 (2% of Salary Cap); 2013 - $1,500,000 (1% of Salary Cap)

    2012 Stats:
    16 Games Started - 3,400 Passing Yards - 24 Passing TDs - 16 INTs

Not since Jay Cutler in 2010 has there been a notable free agent quarterback worthy of a big contract, which has led us to the steepest decline in contracts with most GMs preferring to find a suitable back up for the league minimum. Like the running back position, the GML has also seen a trend in drafting a franchise player or starter at the position.
