Hmm, it's the age old question, was it the opponent, or was it a mental approach, an ability to come out in the game already energized to play and to sustain.. Lazor mentions that he was most impressed with ryans mental approach to the game, on the sidelines, on the field. It's such a mind Fau&& question, makes my head hurt just thinking about it.. I do believe that mental approach determines wins and losses more than folks think, I believe we saw a qb get backed in a corner, and he came out of his shell some.. Philbin goes on to discuss how the team will have to learn to sustain this mental approach, and I agree, the inconsistencies have been so evident the past two years and this year, the demeanor, the mental approach has to be instilled by someone, who better than the qb.. This game is an emotional roller coaster, can he remember and recreate consistency as it pertains to his will and urgency, or will the opponent take him out of his mindset? Maybe this complex intangible determines everything.
And just to add, is it any coincidence that Lazor finally ran ryan on some read options and some Boots and rollouts early? I've been saying just get him involved this way " EARLY" and it will pay off, open up everything..
Let me give you two opposite ends of the spectrum here.. This is by poster keyfin. And this is by a poser Pauly ( not the mod) Two totally different beliefs...crazy lol.
Agreed. I think this made a difference and got Ryan into his comfort zone. The next step for Ryan, IMO, is maintaining that level of play for a whole game. He was red-hot in the first half, but IMO, noticeably cooled from the 3rd quarter to the point where they pulled him. That's a microcosm of Ryan and Joe Philbin. I saw a graphic before the game that of Philbin's 19 losses, 8 of them have come from teams that are sub .500. The team has been consistently inconsistent. They'll rise up against better teams occasionally, but far too often the team is lackadaisical, especially against inferior opponents. Ryan's the same way.
I don't think it's any coincidence that Ryan Tannehill was good running play action from under center. Ryan Tannehill is good at running play action from under center. Mike Sherman never seemed to figure that out.
In my experience, consistency comes through repetition and experience in most things. I would think football would be similar. We've seen that Tannehill can execute nicely at times. Maybe now it starts to become consistent with more and more reps and experience both as a QB and in the new system. Wishful thinking i know, but it would make sense if it happened.
Guys, we played The RAIDERS. I am thrilled we won, but call me when we drop 38 on an actual NFL team.
Food for thought: The Raiders have given up the most points per game of any team Miami has faced this season. The Indianapolis Colts have played three teams that have given up more points per game than the Raiders, including the abysmal Jaguars (who are giving up a historically bad 38 ppg). People aren't complaining about the Colts being able to put up 40 points on cupcakes, so why should we complain about our team putting up 38 points on bread pudding?
Time to focus this on the Packers now. Raider game is long gone. Show us Miami what you can . Take advantage of the division. Seize this moment.
Call me when you realize the Raiders were top half of the league in defense, in yarda allowed and points allowed, going in to their game with us...and nnearly beat the Pats at Foxborough...
Just like Luck, one broadcast said they were talking to him and it almost takes him getting hit to warm up. Ryan seems to be a little but the same. Get him involved, get the sweat going. I'd call a read option run first series every game, or a rollout.
There isn't another coach in the NFL that can motivate like Harbaugh can. That would be akin to saying we'd be 4-0 right now if we just had Peyton Manning. They are clearly the best in the game at their respective positions, but knowing that and being able to do anything about it are two different things.
Knock it all you want but Tannehill did play better and I believe Philbin had a lot to do with it. You could see him trying to play to win. Now carry it on to the better teams and good things can happen.
You could just have said Ryan is too lackadaisical and left it at that, because that in itself is enough to ensure we're already in trouble. And last season the team was 1-6 against top 10 defenses and 6-1 against below average defenses, which is some evidence that we're not all over the map, we had problems specifically against one type of opponent.
As far as the lackadaisical thing I've mentioned that several times before with respect to Tannehill and the commentator in the Jets game might have shed some light on why that could be the case for me. He says in talking with Brees and Payton they can't stress enough the value of each individual possession, each individual possession is not quite like life and death like being down a TD in the final minute of the game but it should be viewed as at least close to that. He theorized a lot of young QBs like Geno just don't value possessions enough coming from college, and especially if they come from a high flying spread offense where they get 100 possessions a game, or can easily make up for a 1st and 20. I don't know if this is Tannehill's problem but it could be part of it. It would make sense because I find Tannehill and the offense looks so much better in the 2 minute offense, like night and day different.
If we lose to the Packers, it will be clear to many that the Oakland game meant nothing....this is who we are and this is the coach Philbin is. There was already momentum building after the KC game to get rid of JP. If we lose to the Packers, thats two losses in a row at home, and I think his fate will be sealed as soon as we are out of the playoffs. As strange as it is, RT and JP are sealed together. NO HC worth his weight in salt is going to want to take a team without being able to pick his own QB...Tannehill does not give anyone any reason to stake their job on him. If however, the Dolphins don't resort to last year and the year before and the year before that, and they come out and make a statement vs GB...then these Fins might just be a different team. Philbin might be the coach we all wanted him to be and RT might have overcome his many QB maladies and be aquality starter. THis next game could not be more telling for the future of our coach and QB.
It could also mean the Packers are a good team and also the favorites to win their division and they also have a Top 3 quarterback... but okay
Well...to be fair DJ..youve been yelling for Ryan to run...and Lazor basically came right out and said...just because we see an opening for him to run, doesnt mean that he can. Some of Ryans critics have said he wont run, or he doesnt have the mental side to run....when in reality, it wasnt his choice at this time to run.
I disagree...losing to the Packers wont mean anything has changed, any more then beating the Packers does. To show this team is any different, it needs to win 8-9 more games this season. Which means they have to start putting together consistent winning games....you cant win two in a row...then loose two in a row. Not till we get to 9 or 10 wins with some games left will I believe he might have turned a corner
Passer rating differential rules the roost in the NFL, you have to go into this expecting Rodgers is going to have ~100 passer rating. So we will likely need Tannehill to have the game of his career to win. Having said that Philbin has intimate knowledge of Rodgers having game planned/coordinated him into the record books with the highest single season passer rating of all time and a 14-1 record. So if Philbin knows his strengths then he should also know his weaknesses, assuming he even has any.
i posted one of the quotes in the original, when i get back ill post more. the interviews were on my dolphin app so im not sure how to post that link over to here.
Ive been referencing steve young since i saw ryan not engage his athleticism early in year one, it was a riveting interview and made so much sense, he literally tells you that he didnt listen to the play call, as soon as he saw the linebackers turn and run, he would take off thru a lane, he said it would totally get him in the right mindset, and was totally imperative to how he attacked a defense and how they attacked him.
Yes 13-1. The one loss was against Luck who had an even better passer rating that day, around 110 if I remember correctly. And if Sean Smith could have pulled down the INT that stat would have been 14-0.
You actually get just a tad more mileage out of adjusted net yards per attempt (ANY/A) differential, which Tannehill did very good with regard to in the Oakland game. There again, however, Aaron Rodgers has the highest career ANY/A in history, so like you said, Tannehill's work will be cut out for him.
Call me silly...but that makes me think the defense has its work cut out for it. RT can't "beat" Rodgers...head-to-head passer rating aside (which isn't a guarantee anyway), he has nearly zero impact on Rodgers' effectiveness. Tannehill's work against that defense shouldn't be much of a problem (they're good against the pass, but last in the league against the run, plenty mismatch there). We'll need to hold the Pack under 25 or so, to win, IMHO. Edit: Silly team sport.
Detroit and Seattle laid out the blueprint. Just like Buffalo and KC laid out ours. Need a seriously well-planned/schemed game.
I actually think we need to run run run against the worst run defense in the league..take our shots deep when they are there.. And do what ever Seattle did on defense..
Yep...they're giving up almost 180 yards on the ground per game...need to really take advantage there....including RT if possible.
Bologna sandwiches, he's had ample opps to run with the football..or escape the pocket, or consciously see a lane and take off, you just gotta trust it and do it, and the coaches won't say sh@@, if the result is positive, it becomes part of your repertoire.. No one is gonna be mad for ryan taking it upon himself to run, escape, escape and run.
The running thing is an idea, but as it stands now, the correlation between Tannehill's number of rushing attempts and his QB rating, game-by-game on his career, is but 0.45. The correlation between his number of rushing attempts and his YPA is 0.33. This means there's a whole lot about his game that isn't associated with the number of times he's running the ball. It might be a piece, but so far it's been a relatively small one.
I'm not sure what that means, but he hasn't been good enough from the pocket to forget what I'm talking about.. He needs to run, and run early, left, right, up the middle, with purpose...everything points to it being the right strategy.
