Kevin Nogle@thephinsider Will Smith contract affect Tannehill contract, Lazor talks to media, and more. News You May Have Missed 9/2/14 http://sbnation.com/e/5858410
If Tannehill plays the way we all hope he does this season....it will be money well spent. If there is one person in our front office I have absolute trust in when it comes to salary cap, and putting together a contract, its Dawn Aponte. Best in the business.
If Tannehill doesn't play above the rim, there's no point in giving him a new contract. He's got 1 year left on his deal and a 5th year option looming after 2015. If he continues to play more like Andy Dalton and Joe Flacco than an elite QB, I'd rather we draft a QB in round 1 in 2015 w/a new head coach.
Twitter hasn't disappointed I saw Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton nakedddddddddd.... Yippieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!
Andy Dalton is in the tier of Big Ben, Phillip Rivers and so forth IMO. If Tannehill plays like him we will be fine.
IMO, Tannehill is better than Andy Dalton and Alex Smith. If Tanny has a good 2014, he should get a raise. IMO, if the team doesn't redo his contract, he should hold out. But thats my opinion. Forget about the 5th year team option.
I'm not sure why people are still surprised with every QB that signs a new contract/extension. Basically, if you're a top 12-18 QB you're going to be getting at least 15M per season. It's the going rate for the position. If Tannehill plays within that 12-18 range, don't expect anything less than a 5 year 75M contract.
This ^. Flacco broke the mold with that ridiculous contract he got, then a few others followed suit and now it's the norm. Cap will continue to grow, and is expect to jump another $10M+ this year, which somewhat off-sets the impact. If Tannehill proves he's the franchise...I see no problem whatsoever with him getting an Alex-like contract. It's been a LONG time since we've been even able to consider paying a QB good money. Edit: And if he don't prove it fully this year, he has a 4th year because of the optional 5th. There's no need to worry about this decision at this point anyway.

I'm going to assume or pencil in that RG3 will be in the 15+ club as well. That will be 17 QBs(more than half the league) that make >15M per season. And the only reason why Roethlisberger is where he is is due to signing his contract 6 years ago. He'll be at 20M per season soon Whoops, forgot Brady. That makes 18 QBs in the 15+ million per year range
Andy Dalton is not on the same tier as Big Ben or Phillip Rivers. Those two practically border the elite category. They have for years. Andy Dalton has thrown 49 interceptions in three seasons w/roughly the same amount of attempts. 13, 16, 20. He's actually getting worse year-to-year. Dalton's career completion rate is 61%. His QB rating is a beastly 85 in the modern day NFL. Andy Dalton is trash. Let's not even look at his playoff stats... They're beyond pathetic. At least Flacco pretended to be good in one post-season. Bottom line, Ryan Tannehill doesn't deserve a new contract. Not now in 2014. And he shouldn't receive one until 2016 at the earliest, if ever. If Tannehill has a strong season, we can still get him cheap for the following two seasons. There's no rush to pay him. See Carolina and Cam Newton.
My biggest fear is Tannehill playing only as good as Andy Dalton, doing just enough to get a big contract, and saddling yourself to him
I believe RT's ceiling is higher than Dalton's...if he can master Lazor's offense, he'll prove it. But like Superman said, no need to rush to an extension for him for a while.
Your not liking Dalton doesn't make him a bad QB. There are more things to suggest he's very good than very bad. Lets see how he does this season, I'd guess his TD stay nearly the same with fewer interceptions.
How I feel about Andy Dalton is based on his performance. I didn't randomly decide not to like him. He's completely inconsistent, erratic, and has been worse than abysmal in the playoffs. Jay Gruden is now coaching Washington too. Good news? AJ Green is healthy. Chuck and pray still a go.
I wouldn't say Andy Dalton is bad. But I would say he's not good. This is relatively speaking of course, which is the only way to look at things IMO. He's approximately the 15th-18th best QB in the NFL. I don't really envision him getting anwhere above 12th on a consistent basis. That's not where I want Tannehill to end up. Right now I'd say he's around 20. But if he doesn't creep up to around 15, then I would rather not invest heavily in him. There's 2 guys, maybe 3 in the list above that I wouldn't want to be saddled with. Cutler, Dalton, and maybe Matt Stafford. All the other guys I could be convinced deserve their contracts.
I believe Ryan Tannehill has all of the physical tools to be a generational QB. Does he learn to make the football field change for him...is what I want to see. My new nickname for him this season is: Ryan Tan "he take us over the" Hill.... I sure hope so!
