Let's come up with "thephins" definition of words for describing greatness and epic sucktitude. So much time is spent in various threads arguing over what is "elite", "pretty good", "horrible", etc. So forget what you're own personal definitions are various words and lets hammer out a scale that way we can avoid these space wasting arguments in the future. I propose: GOAT: greatest of all time. The top person at that position in history. No one has ever been better. Example: Shula is GOAT. T3: Top 3 of all time. One of the 3 best in history at that position. Example: Marino is T3. Elite: Top 5 currently playing. One of the 5 best at that position currently in the league Example: Cameron Wake is Elite. DG: Damn(Darn) good. One of the Top 15 at the position in the league. Example: Branden Albert is DG. Solid: Not the best player but not embarrassing either. Solid contributor. Might make the occasional play. Average. Example: John Denney is Solid. CP: Crappy player. Not good. Is a major hole at the position. Example: John Jerry is CP. WOAT: Worst of all time. Example: Legedodo Nanaint and Jon Martin are WOATs. Discuss.....
And ... FAR: Fanatical against reason Example: Your assessment of Jon Martin at LT before last season began, and your insistance on flaming me every chance you could because I called it true instead of being a FAR. I love the Dolphins, but I'll never sugar coat it. I told you last season would fall to what would be one of the worst offensive lines and one of the worst LT's in football. You tried to run me out of the building for it and labeled me a troll. Optimism only goes so far.... You owe me an apology. And to the guy I bet that we would finish behind Buffalo last season, you were right, barely and with a little luck. Good call. NOW...2014 ! FINALLY. We are a little short at LB and OG, but this team is FINALLY gonna make us proud, and don't be suprised if this new GM (whom I want to erect a statue of outside "Joe Robbie Stadium" already), will bring in some depth sometime this preseason at Guard and Tackle. I like your idea ...
I agree with Goat....I agree with elite...T 3 is fine... For me in all my years it's simple. Starting from bottom to elite. Bad player= Jon Martin Decent\pretty good player= Koa Misi Good/solid= randy Starks Great player/elite at position= Brent grimes, wake.. It's basically four levels of play..bad..pretty good/decent....solid/good...great/elite.
I agree in general. I think that there needs to be a distiction between a solid starter and an average starter though. Solid is a guy who isn't a Pro Bowler, but who you're happy to have in his position and would be comfortable for years to come. Average is a guy who's ok being the starter this year, but who you may want to replace with a free agent or in the draft next year. Poor/crappy is the step below that, where the guy might just be getting by, and needs to be replaced when you get the chance. Liability is the bottom, where the guy is clearly hurting the team RIGHT NOW and needs to be taken out of the lineup. GOAT Elite Great Solid Average Poor Liability WTF! Cut him!
Might as well stir the pot. Like the definitions, and I'm going to classify Ryan Tannehill as "solid" at the moment. Having said that, I think he moves into "darn good" by mid-season with Pouncey back and the new offensive system with better receiving corps.
I prefer this scale... all the acronyms suggested by Fin D are going to get me confused (which is ironic considering the title of the thread).
Petty...Nah. He dished it out, he can take it. We are all on the same side, thats the bottom line. He'll always be a Dolfan Brother to me but I reserve the right to say...TOLD YOU MFer..haha. I kid with the "D" ....I actually love his enthusiasm and his love of the Dolphins.
Miami was 8-8. Buffalo was 6-10, and won both games vs. Miami. So no. Whoever that was, was not right "barely". He was right by A LOT. There was no luck either. Bad Luck for Miami...yes. That was an average call by whoever that was, and an awful gut wrenching, horrific, vomit inducing call by you. Just keepin' it real.
Hmmm, yeah, that great and elite one is tough, I usually don't throw out great unless the player is elite though ya know.. I don't think you can have a number attached to the word elite?? Because there might be more than 5, or there might not be five.. Now that I think about it, any player that I think is great is elite...great is great, it shouldn't be less than elite...idk.
Wasn't my call - He picked it, I accepted. But if you think the difference between 6-10 and 8-8 is "ALOT" in the NFL... Ummm, no. But I accept, that was a horrific gut vomiting, blah blah, whatever else call. One out of 50 ain't bleeping bad.
I was wrong about Martin. You were right about Martin. Considering how long you held on to the angst over that plus this is the first post of yours I remember, I might have been right about the troll part though......
John Denney is better than solid. Poor example to use him as such. He is definitely top 15 at his position, so a DG, and possibly top 5, so an Elite.
This, one thousand times. Wannstedt personally presided over the collapse of the franchise from universal respect to a perennial doormat. He was handed a team good enough to go 11-5 and every year things got worse. His drafting, his personnel management, his stupid decisions regarding the roles of the offense and the defense; even his attitude and the way he expressed himself were a slow poison. Remember "it's not a sin to punt?" It's not like we didn't know he was incompetent; we had the Bears to look at.
I can name 4-5 worse GMs we have had righy off the top of my head. Also if you hate Ireland, Parcels is the worst thing to happen.
Which some of us pointed out as soon as Jimmy was going to anoint him as his heir apparent! Some of us were royally ticked off at Wayne for bringing Jimmy to the franchise in the first place. That was actually what began the downslide. Jimmy was not that much better than Shula at drafting to have given him the keys to the kingdom. When Wannabeacoach showed up on the scene - it tightened up posterior sphincters in a good number of posters in the late '90s.
I hated Wanny. Literally celebrated when he was fired. Little did I know the hardships that lay ahead. It's a testament to Shula that it took SO many years of bad coaches and GMs to erode this great franchise.
