He was starting material out of college, IMO. The thing that concerns me is Bill O'Brien seemingly not taking a shot at his former QB.
I think he lacks Cassell's instincts, but he does have a stronger arm. I'm less bullish on Mallet's starting potential than Mayock. Before that draft I saw him as a second or third round prospect. From the preseason glimpses I've had since, I see him as potentially a lower tier starter (bottom third). It could be a terminology difference, but I probably wouldn't call that "legit". I'd probably use the term "borderline".
Every backup behind Brady "is a legit starter" at some point in people's eyes. Just like Cassell and Hoyer.
Ryan Mallet AKA the player Miami should have drafted instead of Daniel Thomas. But then they probably wouldn't have Ryan Tannehill, so I try not to dwell on it. I'm no great judge of QB talent, but I've always thought Mallet at least had enough talent where he doesn't deserve to be stashed away on a team's bench for his career. I'd love to see him get a chance to start somewhere and see what he really has. So long as it's not with the Patriots or another AFC East team.
Mallett's appeal is a bit different. He's just such a natural thrower. Ball comes out so easy and the velocity he can put on it looks effortless. I'm sure he looks awesome in camp when no one can hit him and he doesn't have to use his sorta clumsy feet. If his lower body is quicker and more sudden, you might have something.
Didn't see it, but the stats on NFL.com say he was 5/12 for 55 yds which ain't good and if you consider it was against the Redskins, that makes it even worse...
He showed same issues he had when he was drafted, on short passes threw the ball into dirt, showed poor mobility, and just overall failed to control the offense. Patriots overall looked very poor everywhere, looked poorly coached with a lot of penalties, and just a lot of poor plays. Redskins running game stood out, especially Lache Seastrunk who tore it up imo. Cousins and Garappolo looked really good.
Yeah I was about to say that Garopollo on the other hand finished the game with some nice stats 8/12 141 Yds and a TD. Our own Brian Tyms had a pretty good game as well, 5 rec for 119 yards and a TD.
Good for Tyms. I wish he was never signed off of Miami's practice squad. Huge talent but little experience.
Not sure how we let that guy slide to the practice squad. Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk 4
After watching Mallett play this first preseason game I am still of the opinion that Miami made the right choice.
If he turns out to be awesome in New England, I am going to be pissed. Of course the Browns should be more pissed with their wide receiver situation.
I think the media is trying too hard to hype up the Patriots' backups for they can receive early round picks for their garbage..
I find it hilarious. New England drafts Tom Brady, and the media make sit look like the Patriots always strike gold with their late round Qbs. Smh.
the bigger joke is the other NFL GMs that also believe the hype, hence the overvalueing of any backup QB coming out of NE. I can easily see the media sheep jumping on the bandwagon, but you'd expect better out the experts
That first game he looked rough and got nicked up. That second game, however, he looked good...but look what he was playing against. Buttfumble also looked good against the non-starters.
