Apparently from cancer at the age of 54. A shame, just got a contract extension 4 days ago from SDST as their baseball coach too. One of the best pure hitters I ever saw.
Lol....you just dont see this stuff much anymore..... http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/11091626/hall-famer-tony-gwynn-san-diego-padres-died
Another crazy stat I just saw tweeted by Peter Abraham, Gwynn K'ed 434 times in 10,232 plate appearances. He faced Pedro Martinez 36 times and never K'ed and faced Schilling 43 times and K'ed 2 times. Guy had just insane hand/eye control and plate coverage/knowledge.
Sad sad news. A life cut drastically short for choosing dipping instead of sunflower seeds to keep oneself occupied.
Ah, he was my favorite ball player as a youth, it always amazed me that as chunky as he was, he could steal bases and was a point guard on the SDSU BBall team He also had a rare blood clotting condition that nearly took his life. Good man all around, though tbh, talked like he just sucked down some helium..
Yeah people forget about this because of his size. He stole 319 bases in his career, currently more than players like Carlos Beltran and Jacoby Ellsbury for example.
Thats insane.....they had a graphic up how about in close to 350 plate appearance against GM, Glavine, and Smoltz he struck out under 10 times.....
If you added Pedro and Schilling the number only went up to 15. Tony was a monster of a contact hitter and from every account I ever heard an all around great guy.
Yep, he was one of those athletes that one would watch and wonder "how does he do it?" IIRC he also won some gold gloves, his arm was never really strong but he was so accurate
Loved Gwynn. Seemed luck such a good guy as well as an amazing player. Definately on my all-time team of players I've seen play as a fan.
