Man stops car to check out Florida alligator, gets bitten by poisonous snake

The unlucky 29-year-old from Boynton Beach was gazing at one deadly reptile on Alligator Alley on Saturday when a venomous water moccasin got up close and personal. A water moccasin bit the 29-year-old man. His girlfriend snapped a picture of it, enabling officials to identify it quickly and stablize him.

When I was a kid of 6 years old, I was walking down a cobbled boat ramp, up to my knees in the river. When I looked down I saw the top half of a water snake bobbing back and forth in the current waiting for me to take another step. Apparently we don't get moccasins up here in PA, but they look so similar to non-venomous water snakes that I don't try my luck. I promptly but discreetly backed out of the water and waited until the boat was in.

Here is what I got from this: Whatever your belief in god or nature, it clearly favors the male species. Basically they are F me mandibles.

"Though both male and female dobsonflies have sharp mandibles, those of an adult male dobsonfly are actually so big – up to 1 inch (25 mm) – that they are unable to harm humans, as they have such poor leverage that they are incapable of breaking the skin. Their mandibles are used exclusively during mating, where males show them off and grasp the females during copulation"

They like to hang out on the insides of kayaks on humid days. Found this out the hard way. The female larva also have mandibles, and they like to hang out in shallow water. I give thanks to fish for keeping those bastards at a reasonable population.

hellgrammite, we used to take a 16 foot fish net in semi swift water and roll rocks over up stream to catch those for fish bait.
