According to Jets beat writer Manish Mehta. No linky because I saw it on twitter (Adam Beasley re-tweeted it). Jets, Pats and Steelers are the other 3. I'd rather have Moreno but MJD is another guy who is good in the passing game. Getting a guy who can block and catch passes out of the backfield is clearly a priority.
I'd rather draft someone high, but if we're bringing a guy in I prefer MJD to Moreno. I think there's really good potential for MJD to be rejuvenated with a fresh start and less burdensome role, whereas I don't think Moreno will ever be as productive as a ball carrier as he was last season.
We could have the edge if he wants to stay in FL. I would love to see MJD in our backfield protecting Tannehill.
I go with Maurice Jones-Drew all day long over Knowshon Moreno and at this point with the prices for these veteran tailbacks looking where they're looking...I don't see why not. It looks like we're talking somewhere in the $3 to $4 million range and I find that difficult to say no to for a guy like Maurice Jones-Drew who has in many ways epitomized what it is to be a professional from both performance and character perspectives, and especially considering the fact that at 29 years old he was still making people miss in 2013 and still gaining yards after contact. Even if he wasn't getting a good YPC he was still doing his part. Unless you believe he suddenly lost his vision then it's hard to deny MJD was doing his part when you look at the missed tackles he created and the yards after contact he achieved. The bonus is that he's a SUPERB pass blocker...and he's always been savvy catching footballs out of the backfield.
Moreno and MJD are both big upgrades on what we have at the moment, relying on the draft is too risky, not one of our picks last year contributed much, thinking you are guaranteed a starter with a draft pick is naive
I'd rather see him go to any of the teams besides the Jets. Not because I think he sucks, but because I just don't see the need for him.
No. That's why I don't understand the interest. Both are pretty lousy pass catchers, but Goodson should be back for next year. He fills that 3rd down pass catcher roll. A real head scratcher.
MJD + Wharton would round out free agency nicely. Both would be underpaid relative to their potential to upgrade the team and would provide 1-3 year cushions for developing younger guys. Probably low cost too which would give us maybe around $10 million to roll over to next year. Next year being the year we probably rid ourselves of Wheeler and maybe Ellerbe if he doesn't improve. I really hate the fact that we have to do these next year calculations every damn off-season.
I shared the same sentiment on MJD a couple of months back on the possibility on signing him. In his case, here is someone who truly needs a change of scenery. I think he could be rejuvenated, if only for a season or two. By then, either Miller pans out, or someone drafted or signed pans out (hopefully). Oddly, a while back, there were reports that the interest in him was "lukewarm". This may simply be a power play by the Fins to drive down the price on Moreno (whom I really liked coming out of school).
I like this interest! Go get him! He's likely to come cheap at this point. Don't really want Moreno. His stats are not that great as discussed in other threads. 1/4 of his 1000 yards last year came in one game when the Pats gave the Broncos the run. His average would be under 4 other than that one game. His average yards after the first hit was 2.1 (29th in the league). He should have put up a much higher average on a team with Manning that is setting passing records. Also don't want to throw a high pick at RB - I don't see a Chris Johnson or a Adrian Peterson out there. Finally, MJD is ideal for this offense. 1) He's a veteran and more than a rookie RB we need a vet who can add some stability and work ethic. 2) he can block (such a novel idea); 3) I think he can still add something with limited carries. But, I'd definitely draft a RB as well. A promising rookie, Miller, and MJD would be ideal. And then just get rid of Thomas. He's had 3 years and simply has not gotten the job done.
The man has spent his entire career with the Jaguars. His numbers don't reflect what he's capable of with a better team. And he's a load.
Dolphins aren't interested according to Salguero.. http://fansided.com/2014/03/24/nfl-...interested-signing-maurice-jones-drew/#!BgwuU I'd rather Moreno at this point.
Thank god. I know people like MJD off his name and career but he's so close to done it's def not worth getting involved, imo.
And you know that, how? My interest is not just off his name. Up until last year (in which he was coming off injury after 6 games in 2012) he averaged 4.7 and 4.8 the prior two years. Last year, on a really bad offense, he averaged 3.4 ypc (that was as high as any other of the reserve runners). I just don't get the love for Moreno given that his stats are not that impressive, not much more than MJD really, on a team with a great offense and QB. More telling is the fact that MJD ranked ahead of Moreno in yards after contact on inside runs. Moreno was ranked 39th. If MJD is washed up he should be worse on that. And, on outside runs, MJD is ranked 7th. Obviously, there are a number of variables and not all stats are created equal - but the statement above just doesn't add up. There isn't enough info to say he's washed up - any more than Moreno is. MJD is not a savior nor starter. But, he can bring a number of positive factors to the team, probably cheaper than Moreno, and, with an improved OL, with him not having to be a starter and shoulder that load, with a better passing game, he should perform at a much higher level - along with actually being able to block on passing plays. And, we still have Miller as a starter. But, MJD could help Miller in several areas. But, evidently we are not interested. Not that this says anything about the inherent value of MJD. I suspect they think he has too many years on him. However, while that would be the case if we were looking for a starter - for a backup I think he'd be an ideal fit. He'd be better than Thomas in a number of areas, imo. And, I don't think Moreno brings much to the table. Even though Miller and Moreno are pretty even as far as yards after contact on inside runs, Lamar Miller ranked ahead of him (top 10, #8) on yards after contact for outside runs. https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/12/19/between-the-tackles-part-2/
Idk how anyone who watched him last year could really disagree. If you think he's going to miraculously turn it around at his age and w the mileage and abuse he's taken then you're free to believe that but imo the odds are against it.
You realize if his YPC was terrible but his yards after contact were great, it means he was being hit much earlier than most backs right? The stats don't support your opinion that he's lost anything.
And you're going to blame that on his OL I take it? If you want to manipulate that stat in to showing that he's great then be my guest but the facts that I presented (age, mileage, significant injuries) mean a lot more imo.
Nono you're taking my stance wrong. I'm saying he's still serviceable in the right scenario. I actually reallly like Miller and if we don't want to reach and take a back early he's a great option and compliment.
It may be true that the Dolphins aren't interested in MJD, but I don't take that report as really saying that, other than the headline, which seems misleading. As far as I can tell, the article is based exclusively on the Salguero tweet, which merely said the Dolphins haven't talked to him yet. And of course Armando doesn't necessarily know who they have or haven't talked to or who they intend to talk to. Others are still reporting the Dolphins are scheduled to meet with MJD and his reps in Orlando this week. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap20...t-mjd-reps-to-meet-with-four-teams-in-orlando
Yes. The article says more than the information available. If the report is true then look for the Dolphins to do a meet in the next day, day and a half. I'd love to get that guy for a year or two at a few million. And, then bust it on the OL as well as another RB in the middle of the draft. I'd be significantly happier with him than "Just say Knowshon-to-breaking-tackles-Moreno"
I don't remember the numbers exactly but Moreno made $1.7 million last year and MJD made $5 million. I'll take Moreno all day for that difference, or even less than that difference.
I think the point is that what they made last year is meaningless. Completely. they will have to take what the market bears. And that Moreno is looking for his first big payday and wants more than $1.7 M! And that while MJD wants as much as he can get he is likely to be more realistic about his age, his numbers last year, and his injuries and wants to keep playing. Moreno particularly in his first time as a UFA is likely looking for a big contract.
