This is going to be messy IMO. I am already thinking it may be better to just go forward without Brent and Miko.

Of course, we could tag him and then watch Miko go beserck.

Then we could later trade him telling the NFL we didn't plan to trade him but his agent made such a fuss. You can tag and trade, you just can't plan it that way. The way I understand the rule is that the NFL would have to somehow prove intent, which is really hard to do.

The team acquiring Grimes could give him a long term deal if they chose to as long as he had not signed the tender.

It would be a nasty cap hit if we do get stuck franchising him. 120% of this year's tag amount because he was franchised before.

The 2014 projected tag for CB's is 11,256,000.00. Do the math if you want to. I just can't bear it.

I thought that was only if tagged in consecutive seasons.

What does he want a 3 year? Anything over that is too long. I'd say 3 year 7.5 a year. Anything more might as well go after a younger talib

I would offer 4 years 32 mil. Pay most in the first 2 years. If he gets too slow footed in the 4th year then we can just release him. If he doesn't take it, then tag him and try to develop Taylor/Davis as much as possible in preparation for 2015.

Miko can go beserk all she wants. Contrary to the myth around here Miko IS NOT Grimes agent.

This is always funny, since im not his agent

That's fine...he doesn't want the tag...he can agree to a team friendly deal. He's not the first nor will he be the last player to constantly complain about the tag.

Why is this a bad thing? If you follow the link in the NFL article back to the original Herald article, Barry Jackson says:

So basically Grimes is saying he wants to work out a multi-term deal and feels the Phins do too. Isn't that what we as fans want?

I fail to see how this means it's going to be messy.

Wow, wake up. All free agents say they want to stay where they are and work out a long term deal. That is what the league demands they say for publicity reasons.

What it really means is he wants to hit the open market and take the biggest pay check with the most guaranteed money, and if he gets tagged he is going to holdout.

Why will it be messy? He will either sign a mutually beneficial, multi-year contract, get tagged and get a one year deal or be able to walk. No player likes the tag, they want more guaranteed cash.

As for his wife, who cares. If he doesn't have an issue with her commenting very publicly on everything he does then why should I have a problem?

From everything I've seen as it pertains to Grimes, I'm ready to committ to a 3/25 million dollar deal..

I agree with the first part of your comment, what Grimes said is nothing more than standard FA speak. Where I fail to follow you is in how that translates that into it going to get messy or that he is going to hold out.

Of course he doesn't want tagged. No big deal. I like 3 years. I'd go 8 or a little higher maybe, depending on how structured. He'd have to be happy w/ that and good luck getting more elsewhere.

    Exactly.

Grimes played great for us last season and I certainly want him back. But he chose to sign a 1 year deal despite a multi-year offer being available. I understand why he did it, but if he gets tagged and Miami is unable/unwilling to reach a multi-year deal, it's on him. The franchise tag is an intrinsic risk for any player with an expiring contract, especially for one as talented as Grimes who chose a prove it deal at the age of 30, coming off a major injury.

this isn't Brent Grimes the 27 year old, this is Brent Grimes the 31 yr old. Holding out, and meaning it, could cost him one of his last seasons of strong play. He had a fantastic season, but knows damn well that its going to be very hard to repeat it. If he gets tagged again, it could cost him millions if he gets hurt or flatout just doesnt play great next season.

He wants a longterm deal because he doesnt want to be fighting for a contract at age 32 or 33.

It's why, in all likeliness, a very good deal (7-9 mil) with Miami will be more enticing than the alternative.

Yep. I love my team but after what happened in ATL Franchising Grimes would be wrong on several levels. Let's be the team that takes care if their own, not the team that screws people over whenever it's convenient. Grimes, Starks, Soliai should all get new deals IMO.

I'm with Deej, I think he can play till 34. If not cut him and take the hit. But this team has a rep for not paying the guys who are the backbone of the team and that ish resonates through ought the locker room in ways that far out weigh saving a few million bucks.

Of course he hates the tag, all players do. Its an advantage the owners use to force players to sign long term deals. Hes not going to get some 5-8 year mega deal from anyone. I think we can sign him to a deal that is agreeable on all sides. A 3-4 year deal in the 25-30 million range isn't unfair to him. We signed him, gave him a shot, he deserves a nice contract but he's 30, he isn't in a position to negotiate a crazy deal. I like our chances to keep him. And really if we lose him then we are in a terrible position, we either have to sign multiple FAs and hope they work out or use multiple draft picks early and hope for the best at the CB position.

He's 31 in July. So he's 31 when the season starts, which is all that matters.

Better hope they sign him. If not, he's going to New England. They're talking about not using the tag on Talib.

I'm sure Miami don't want to have to use the tag on him either, an $11m cap hit for Grimes would limit our options in FA as well as giving us a disgruntled player and removing the option of using the franchise tag on anyone else. Unlike the OP, I don't see how this makes it messy, two parties trying to avoid the tag and wanting him to remain in Miami will hopefully result in a compromise being worked out.

There is only so much money to go around, if you sign all of those players above and with allocating cash for draft picks, how will they sign anybody to help the OL?

I would like Miami to sign Grimes and Starks (if it isn't outrageous) then either draft Nix or the kid from Pitt provided they don't blow it in the combine...

Because if he was 31 now, as you said in your post, when the season starts he would be an older 31..

If he signs a three year deal, he will finish it at the age of 33 years old..your statement would make him 34 when the contract finished.

I honestly don't see either Soliai or Starks returning, which I felt differently about at the beginning of this season. It's time to get younger at the position. Will Dallas resign Jason Hatcher? We have Odrick and even A.J. Francis in the wings, and could spend a draft pick or a little bit of money for depth at the position.

I'm more concerned with the intangibles than the talent. Last years team seemed to be sorely lacking in terms of leadership, losing two vets and replacing them with outsiders or rookies won't help IMO.
