My wife said "back in the day " tonight and I asked her when that was. She said "Mid 1970's" Got me wondering what most people mean when they say "back in the day". If there were an article in The Onion about scientists calculating the exact date of "back in the day" when would it be? For me, it would be relative to what I am talking about. Back in the day when I am talking about kids toys means 1975-1985 when I was a kid. Back in the day relative to partying at bars would mean 1994-2004. When is back in the day, for you? Back in the day for me would be anytime from 1984 (when I was 7) right up through high school finishing in 94/95. Come to think of it...that was some good times ;p
Back in the day = 15-24 Way back in the day = birth-14 What you think is still current day until pain for no reason snaps you back to reality for being 30+= 25-29
ditto on this. although, I'd earmark it as "starting" with 7th grade, so 11-12 years old. 1983 -> through college (93).
Depends who I am talking to. Back in the day probably begins for me right when the song below come out. I think I was about 12. It's really more for people that were older than me, but I listen to it now and I'm taken back to be being a teenager. It is one of those markers
My highschool graduation year. so that was at the edge of my total irresponsibility and the beginnings of me becoming "sane".
If you lead a full life, don't make decisions based on fear and experience each moment, you'll have many "back in the days" throughout your life. My childhood was ****, so my real life started as an adult. Each era up until the last few miserable years has had its moments of elation. Usually with finD's mom.
In some part it relies on the context of the conservation and the age of the people you are talking to. For example, if you are talking to children about cartoons you watched on Saturday morning , back in the day would refer to the time you were a similar age to those children.
Well let me explain better. Let's say that your were a child in the 1980s, and you would have watched cartoons like Thundercats, G.I. Joe, and Voltron. Then you grow up and have kids of your own some time later. And one day you observe that your kids are watching cartoons like Spongebob, Regular Show, and Adventure Time. At that point you proudly exclaim, "You know kids, back in my day we used to watch Thundercats, G.I. Joe, and Voltron." In this case "back in my day" would be referring to the time you were a child in the 1980s.

Reading this got me thinking...and these are all relative to my age. If you were born in 1980 or later... -McDonald's has ALWAYS served breakfast -There has ALWAYS been cable television -There has ALWAYS been CNN -There has ALWAYS been MTV...and they actually showed these things called- "music videos" -There has ALWAYS been touch tone phones -"7-11" convenient stores have always been open 24 hours a day -You've NEVER seen the Miami Dolphins win a Super Bowl If you were born in 1990 or later... -There have ALWAYS been cell phones -There have always been personal computers -Germany has always been one country -The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was something you learned about in history books If anyone can think of anything they'd like to add, by all means, please do but to the point, back in the day for me was... When parents couldn't KEEP their kids in the house...where we played football in the street and the hum of the street lights coming on resulted in us kids scattering to get home before we got into trouble... When we would take our empty Coca-Cola bottles to the store for the refund, but another coke and maybe play the pinball machine at the corner 7/11...or when we'd REALLY get lucky and get $5.00 to go to the arcade and play skeetball, cashing in the tickets for prizes... When you would get into a fight in the neighborhood to settle a score and be able to shake hands afterwards and that was the end of it... When we would go anywhere...ANYWHERE on our bicycles and not have to worry about helmets... When the one day a week in which you could sleep in....Saturday mornings, was the one day you woke up early to watch the long anticipated Saturday morning cartoons Ahhhh, how growing up as a kid in the 70's was such a wonderful simple time!
The mathematical formula to find exactly when "back in the day" was, is this.... 1/sqrt(2) |true> + 1/sqrt(2) |false>
