Just watched season 3, ep. 11 of The Wire. This whole series I'm wondering, what's the love for this character over. You take that name at another site prior to 2004?

He was easily one of the best characters on the show.

String was a dirty dude. But he was by far the smartest and most willing to take his crew out of drugs into legit business. His methods were flawed, but with Marlo and Avon you knew you was gone in up in jail or dead..

He had Wallace and Dee killed (one who was a victim of circumstance and one who had hope of getting their head on straight). Then banged Dee's lady...

Wallace was an idiot for coming back and Deangelo was about to snitch.

I liked him better in the Thor sequel. That was his best work.

Wallace had siblings to look after. Victim or circumstance. Why else would he remain loyal to them even after being starved?

The Barksdale organization were going down regardless of anything Deangelo couldn't have done.

So he was better off to them dead? They all but told him don't come back or you're dead.

Not at that point they weren't.

We might as well dog him for even having been involved in the game. Another dead pawn on the chess board.

Deangelo was betrayed his entire life and realized that Wallace was the ultimate example of how String rewards loyalty.

Avon was incarcerated not too long after getting out, and String dug his own grave with Omar/Muzone.

They were practically born into that life and were not strong enough to overcome. Weebay's son in season 3 is an illustration of this. Though he was saved by Colvin.

I guess I was just disappointed that he couldn't outsmart the game. :/

I'm 3/4 into season 4, the weakest season thus far IMO. I really enjoyed season 2, where I understand it took some criticism. Not feeling the Dangerous Minds, school angle.

I don't know if is loyalty...but HBO does stick with a lot of their actors. From the Wire, To Trueblood, to Boardwalk Empire...

    Pretty cool

For me, character development, be it in movie or tv, is always the most exciting. Great shows who don't have kinks to work out...I'm usually going to love season 1. But I didn't care for the student and political characters. I guess that's why I didn't like it as much. Major crimes vs Bartsdale crew is my sweet spot in this show.

Apparently, the ambition of the show creator, whoom I heard interviewed, was to create a 5 part cycle which examined the five aspects of a metropolis. He based it off Greek concepts. So rather than a linear model, it was heavily based in larger conext, theme, etc, tey each story line enriched the others so as it built and interwove it became a big, deep, three dimensional understanding of our society.

But I get it. You liked the "bang-bang" shows.

    I like bang bang everything.

Certain things interest me more than others. Season 2 with the longshoreman had some of my favorite episodes. That was right up there with season 3.
