Is Tannehill tipping off the plays?

Someone mentioned this the other day. I don't know if it was here or on Twitter but it was something I really didn't think twice about. I just got done watching the game again and Tannehill yells "GO!" once on every single pass play, and yells it twice on every single run play before the snap.

I don't get why this is happening but you would think someone smarter than me would have picked up on this and addressed it. Someone on that sideline needs to be aware of this. It's odd.

I'd have to watch again to really look into this.
I'd be absolutely shocked if this were true.
Snap counts aren't associated with plays. It's simply the way to keep defenses from jumping the gun.

I mean, as far as I could tell it is true. Tannehill yells pretty loudly so you can hear it on TV. "GO!" is always pass and "GO! GO!" is always run.

I noticed that too. To throw off opposing defenses every once and a while he should say, Go ninja, go ninja! Go!

If Tannehill is passing this well while defense are knowing he's going to pass it... damn.

Gotta be coincidence. Playcalling and snap count have nothing to with each other. If anything, you'd think we'd pass more often when its a harder snap count so as to try and draw the offsides and get a free play deep.

Coincidence was my first thought too, but it matched up every single time. That's one hell of a coincidence.

That's not really tipping off a play. Tipping off a play is them knowing it before the ball is snapped. There's not enough reaction time for the defense to base it off the snap count.

Falcons never figured it out. Most of their guys went for the run on the Sims TD catch.

I find it interesting that he uses "go" instead of the more traditional "hut" or "hike".

Lets not jump the gun here..theres got to be a logical reason for it. Game plan anyone ? Let the next opponent watch film and think they're on to something then change it up dramatically. Also, I'd like to think our coaches arent nearly so stupid .

We've used the exact same snap count for two seasons now.

    "Blue 88.....GO!"
    "Blue 88.....GO! GO!"

I never thought to see if either followed run or pass. That would be quite a tell. Until they change it during a game. ;) Perhaps that's what they're waiting for -- someone to catch on.

The simple snap count is a function of coaching. It's how he's told to do it. I can't pretend to know the precise logic/reasoning behind it. But I would imagine it has to do with tempo and avoiding pre-snap penalties. I would like to see us be able to draw the defense offsides from time to time and keep them off balance. Then again, I don't recall a lot of defensive linemen getting big jumps off the ball. And I believe the cadence isn't always the same. The pause before GO tends to vary as I recall, which makes a difference.

Ultimately, the simplicity might not matter. Ryan gets to the line, reads the defense and makes whatever adjustments he deems necessary. So it doesn't appear that's he's restrained in any way.

Last year when the texans and JJ watt had their way with Tannehill, JJ came out and said he studied our snap count and plays via hard knocks. . And it obviously paid off so maybe rock is onto more than we think. Either way it's true to say there isnt much time to react to it anyway

Thats one thing I never understood.....in a snap count, they usually call out a color and a number...do they mean much of anything? I mean Im sure they do, but whats the story behind it?

When I played in High School the snap count was a word, in this case a color, that indicated a formation type, and the number indicated the play in the formation, meaning the gap for a run or the hot receiver or both

I've also used a color as a hot read to change a WR's pattern. Back in the day I was a fast guy so if pressed the QB would call "red" and I knew he wanted me to run a streak/fade instead of whatever pattern had been called.

This is interesting. I don't think it's absolute, but it is certainly true the vast majority of the time. I'm about 3/4 through game one watching this, and I have one instance I'm fairly sure the 'rule' broke, and two others it may have (audio is hard to tell).

I'd think this would really impact play action -- and last year ESPN called out play action in particular as a point of strength: http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/52995/ryan-tannehill-excelling-in-play-action

Since the ball is practically snapped right at the first GO or 2nd GO there is just not enough time for the defense to realize it and react correctly.
Till they are able to realize it AND react correctly they probably have seen the handoff or drop-back anyway and are reacting based on that.

If that whole thing would really be an issue we would be in trouble since a long time ago and not be 3-0.

And... we would have the dumbest coaching stuff in the history of the game... :laughy:

I'm not saying this remotely plausible, or true, however the best NFL defenders are watching the QBs heads and adjusting accordingly, knowing the call as the ball is snapped is a huge advantage. If you know it's a run before the hand-off how are you guys saying there will be no time to adjust? Again I'm not saying this is happening, but if it were it's a huge issue.

That said I can't for the life of me think a coaching staff would be that dumb.

Our previous record doesn't matter. Patriots were 9-3 and gunning for a playoff bye when we blanked them 21-0 and then Zach went on TV and told everyone he figured out their playcalling by listening to audio? We killed them that game.

You have it backwards Doc. "Go Go" is a run, "Go" is pass. I'm not saying it's a HUGE deal, but it is a bit concerning to me.

Oops. Now I've confused myself. It must be that he said "Go" even in play action, which would theoretically tip off a pass.
