Linux-based operating system that goes on gaming-oriented boxes that attach to your TV, aka consoles.

Valve's making a console, fellas. And they're doing it in the way that people wanted the Xbox One to work.

This actually looks really good at first glance, and might be the HTPC OS of choice from now on.

Developers still need to release games for Linux.

Problems with updates, having to redownload and reinstall games and the steam platform... It's just a pain in the *** when I'm constantly traveling and have limited connections a lot of times. I miss the good ol days of hard copy games.

Steam lets you burn games to disc.

Nope, you still need to go through Steam if it's purchased or registered through Steam.

But you can burn the game to a disc to have a backup, or to eliminate the need to redownload like you had to.

It's an interesting design. Valve is relying pretty heavily on touch accuracy. I've never found touch to be very good for gaming, but I guess a thumb-based trackpad should be functionally similar to an analog stick.

Valve's showing off Steam Boxes at CES.

Basically, you can now buy a PC in a console form. Complete with a controller.

I noticed if you have Witcher 1 and 2 on Steam, you can pre-order Witcher 3 for 20% off right now.

Just bought Far Cry 3 (already have Blood Dragon). I expect I'll be breaking my $5 rule a few times during this sale (AC4 & Watch Dogs specifically).

    Boo to just ~4.0 MB/S.

Witcher 2 was the first game I bought when I built my PC (it literally just had come out). I have still yet to play more than an hour.

It's on my short list to play next.

The low price and Witcher 3's solid E3 presentation led me to give the series a try. I'll probably get to them in 2017.

So I guess we'll use this as the PC master (race) thread?

DirectX 12 to be Windows 10 exclusive

And Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8.1 users for the first year of its release.

What's happening with DX12 is exactly what happened with DX11. No surprise there. But am I missing something, what happened to Windows 9?

Every other Windows sucks, so they just decided to skip it? (Note: I'm counting 8.1 as different than 8)

Just further cements me as done with PC gaming for good, I think. I need to take really good care of my two year old Windows 7 laptop too, and make it last as long as it possibly can, or I might not be able to even get a PC I can use the way that I want in the future.

Before I was laid off a year ago (retail), I recieved extensive/endless training from my employer and Microsoft on Windows 8 and Office, and they did their best to just ignore that people without broadband exist. When pressed, they basically shrug and say people like myself don't matter. I would have to imagine from all that I was told that Windows 10 will be more of the same.

PR reason: Windows 10 is so advanced that they had to skip a number to properly portray its advancement.

Possible legitimate reason: Legacy software code that checks for OS versions search for "Windows 9" when looking for Windows 95/98 compatibility, so Microsoft had to skip "Windows 9" to avoid a major software compatibility issue.

    Actual reason: unknown.

I'm confused as to how your work training means you're done with PC gaming.

Sorry. I was already upset about something similar and shouldn't have ranted. Innapropriate place for it.

The training from Microsoft (windows and Office) dealt with everything being online at all times and software being downloaded instead of bought via disc. Period, no exceptions soon. The whole valve/steam deal set me off, and I'm sorry.

I'm not making this stuff up. The PR reason and possible reasons have both actually been put forth.

No problem. Just thought it was an odd topic response.

I'm guessing you have a problem with Office 365. That's unfortunately the future for enterprise deployments of Office; it's cheaper.

I am running pre-release windows 10. It is awesome. Only bug I encountered is that COD Advanced Warfare would freeze randomly during multiplayer play. Otherwise it is as if Windows 7 had steaming hot sex with Windows 8.1 and had a super child.

I have Windows 10 running in a VM. It feels like 7 with a theme that looks like 8 and 8.1. But at this point I upgrade Windows for bug fixes and under the hood improvements (8/8.1's SSD management is light years beyond 7's), so I couldn't care less what it looks like so long as it loads Steam.

I'm excited for DirectX 12, and I'm upgrading my GPU to a compatible release when it's available.

I loved 7, but have been using 8.1 for what seems like a year + and it is fine. Why does it scare the crap out of you?
