"Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin publicly downplayed Mike Wallace's frustration at catching only one pass in the season-opening victory over the Cleveland Browns.

When the two spoke in private shortly thereafter, Philbin assured his big-ticket free-agent acquisition that the game plan would be changed leading up to Week 2.

Philbin followed through on his word, leading to a career-high nine receptions and 115 yards for Wallace in the Dolphins' 24-20 win at Indianapolis.

The wide receiver explained to NFL Media's Jeff Darlington on Tuesday that the increased production was the direct result of an expanded route tree.

Whereas Wallace had been limited primarily to vertical routes in Pittsburgh, his bounce-back game against the Colts came about because Philbin allowed him to try routes the wide receiver had never run before.

According to Darlington, Wallace came away from his meeting and the Week 2 victory encouraged by Philbin's receptiveness."

receptiveness by our coach ? i thought he had lost the team 2 weeks ago...if this really was the first time he ran some of those routes, he looked good doing it, if passes were going his way he was open by a lot

Anybody else surprised we didn't go back to the screen? It was so open and well blocked

The question posed after the brown game, Philbin is at a crossroads with this team and it could go either way depending on what kind of coach he really is, can he manage all the chaos that's going on inside the locker room..

Team looks tough, plays hard, and is very disciplined..

Can't be true. The beat writers clearly established Philbin is unapproachable, inflexible, and uninteresting. The story is a lie.

Routes he had NEVER ran before? That's such a ridiculous statement. Maybe never ran in a Fins uni through only 1 game... but I think it's pretty absurd to imply that he has never ran those routes ever in his career.

my thought exactly. That story has too many holes in it.

Also, I've seen Wallace on those routes in a Steeler uni (they did the screen; they hit him on short slants; etc.). May not have been featured a lot on intermediate routes.

I wonder if Wallace didn't actually say, "Hey, here's some routes a did run in Pitt and was successful, why not try those."

It seemed to me that when he got here in camp and pre-season that they were having him run routes that were more along the Green Bay model.
