I have a couple friends that are diehard Niner fans and they told me he was really impressing in camp last year but with Crab, Moss, Manningham, AJ Jenkins, Kyle Williams, and our old friend Theodore Ginn on the roster there was no room for him. He's a South Florida kid and a great story, rough childhood as he grew up a foster kid after being physically abused by drug-addicted parents who both died, even homeless for a couple months after high school, sleeping in his car. He played basketball in high school but didn't play football until his senior year and without a scholarship ended up at a community college that didn't have a football team. He was able to walk on at Florida A&M and became one of the hardest workers on the team, but was still raw so he redshirted and didn't really contribute until his senior year. He didn't get invited to the combine but he wowed scouts at his pro day with a 39.5 inch vert, 3.93 second 20 yard shuttle, and a 4.4 40 at 6-3, 210. He had his best practice in Miami a couple days ago and even took some snaps with the first team today. May not mean anything but on the first official depth chart he was 3rd string with Binns, but with Binns out of the picture and Wallace, Hartline, and Matthews all dealing with injuries Tyms should get plenty of opportunities to make plays in practice and these preseason games, so I think he'll impress enough to make the final roster.
Bumphis versus Tyms in preseason will be interesting to watch, those are the two most likely gunning for that 6th spot.
I think McNutt, Tyms and Bumphis are contending for 5th spot, need to see them in games to have a better idea
he's got some hops
That back story really makes you want to pull for a guy...I see McNutt and Bumphis making it if we carry 6 though...but who knows?
From the camps that I have been to I have seen a lot of plays where Tyms ends up with the ball, but I haven't seen as much with Bumphis
Don't be surprised if we start the season with 6 WRs. We did last year. Week 1 on our roster were Bess, Naanee, Hartline, Marlon Moore, Matthews, and Armstrong. All but Matthews dressed for the game.
Omar's been a fan since OTA's.. https://twitter.com/OmarKelly/statuses/339762349844070401 Omar Kelly Verified account @OmarKelly Brian Tyms' release off the line just made me curse. He's explosive.
Damn. Thats a tough childhood. Just got to admire the guy for his attitude and work ethic from the sound of it. A lot of people would quit given that situation.
A receiving corps a strike team would be proud of. It's so bad I wanna shake my laptop to see if any other names fall out onto the list that were maybe trapped behind the "Reply With Quote" tap or something.
Even with that motley crew we carried 6, so no one should be surprised when we keep 6 WRs out of a much more talented group. We kept 4 TEs btw. Counting Clay, who was a FB/TE.
I'm not totally savvy but I thought Tyms was supposed to be a total workout nut. Incredible capabilities. At the same time I think Marvin McNutt and Chad Bumphis are the FOOTBALL PLAYERS I would focus on at that position potentially transitioning from outside looking in to inside looking out.
I'll be watching out for him tommorrow. Got a feelng Hartline and Wallace will get cameos if they play at all so the Tyms, McNutts, Bumphis' of the world will get plenty of PT.
He sounds like a raw athlete who's best chance is on the practice squad. He's the kind of player Ireland likes, but not necessarily the kind Philbin likes.
Listening to McNutt being interviewed I get the impression that he is just a natural ball player. From what I recall him saying, he could have played college basketball or now be playing minor league baseball. So, if there is a sport that involves a ball, he could probably play it at a competitive level.
He came into Iowa as a quarterback but switched to wide receiver after one or two years. He's just a natural athlete.
I like those kind of players. Like CK said, Bumphis seems to have some similar traits. Tyms is such a feel good story. Maybe the toughest upbringing to overcome I've heard of since Patrick Willis. I wouldn't mind, or be surprised if the 3 ended up as our 4, 5, and 6th WRs.
Call me 15 but I want McNutt to make the team just to hear Dierdorf say, "McNutt was all over New England today".
