Found this moth this morning at my daughters day care here in Virginia. 6 1/2 inch wing span.... ideas?
Its the Aryyarra Moth. (pronounced ah-rye-yar-ah). Its named that because its coloring is meant to mimic the Aryyarra Swallow. They are mostly found in Canada, but they have been known to be seen as far south as Virgina. The 2 unusual things about them is that males have a pungent musk (#1) at the beginning of fall, which is their breeding time (#2) not spring. I made every last bit of this up.
It's the moth from the lord of the rings. Also known as mothius middle eartho. When you see one you must kiss its wing to show you are thankful for it saving middle earth and thus human existence other wise the eagles will appear and smite you.
Cut him some slack.... you have to be appreciative when Unlucky blesses us with his presence when he's not busy saving the world of warcraft.
Stop posting pictures of it. It is not a moth. It is one of Obamas top secret drones. He uses them to spy on terrorist children. They are mainly in Northen VA and MD because they are still working the bugs out
what are those leaf things above the antlers? Eye brows? And the pic with the kid behind it... reminds me of that quote from Jaws... when Hooper wants to take a picture of the shark..."need something in the foreground to give it some scale." It's as big as that kids head! We have beetles here... fruit beetles, fig eater beetles... they look like bumble bees flying... but about 3 times the size.
