    Write Up:

Coming in as a rookie GM and taking over for a previous GM was no problem for GM David Rantisi, A.K.A WakeUpItsFootball. Rantisi took over the 49ers franchise on February 8th, 2013. Although it took the rookie GM a few hours to get his head wrapped around all the rules and the forum itself, he did not hesitate to get to work.

As the new GM, Rantisi felt like he had to keep the core pieces of the original team, with the exception of the receiving core, and go from there. Maintaining a west coast offense and a 3-4 defense was also determined from Day 1. Although Rantisi is not a fan of making drastic changes to a roster, this forum league was an exception. The first question he asked himself was "who's my starting quarterback?" You have Kaepernick who lit it up in his 10 starts, he started the Superbowl and he looks extremely promising. On the other hand, Alex Smith is a former number 1 overall pick who was just starting to get into a rhythm with Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. Alex Smith was exceptional in his 2012 performance before he suffered a concussion. Although Rantisi originally shopped Alex Smith around, he felt that either quarterback could still be the starter for the San Francisco 49ers. With that being said, Rantisi found no suitors for veteran quarterback Alex Smith. So what if Kaepernick was put on the block? Instant interest. Many teams bit on the hook when hearing that Kaepernick was available for trade. In short, general manager Rantisi traded Colin Kaepernick to the San Diego Chargers for 3 draft selections (2nd, 2nd, & 4th) as well as receiver Stevie Johnson, young stud Melvin Ingram at outside linebacker and safety Brandon Taylor. Rantisi feels that he received great return on trading Kaepernick, who's main argument against him is his lack of NFL experience. (Link for entire Kaepernick trade and what the 49ers received after the NFL Draft was resolved - click here)

After establishing a starter, Rantisi went out to make sure Alex Smith had weapons to throw to. Previous GM phinsational had already started to make moves at the position in his brief stint as the General Manager. GM Phinsational traded Michael Crabtree to the Broncos in a trade to bring in Eric Decker. His second and final trade was the trade with the Redskins to send receiver Mario Manningham and cornerback Tarrel Brown for receiver Pierre Garcon. Both trades will be listed below.

    1. Michael Crabtree, WR, $5,859,000
    Frank Gore, RB, $6,459,000
    3.95
    5.159

    Denver sends:
    Eric Decker, WR, $1,506,037
    Derek Wolfe, DT, $1,193,582
    1.28
    7.220

    2. Mario Manningham, WR, $4,950,000
    Tarrel Brown, CB, $1,907,312

    Washington sends:
    Pierre Garcon, WR, 8,200,000

After assessing both trades, GM Rantisi loved the first trade. Although you give up your starting runningback in Frank Gore, you get rid of an overrated Michael Crabtree who was looking to receive a $5.8M contract. You bring in a young Eric Decker who should serve as the number 2 receiver on your team and Derek Wolfe who will replace Justin Smith at the defensive end position. You exchange a 3rd and a 5th for a 1st and a 7th as well. Great trade.

GM Rantisi was not too fond of the second trade. Although Rantisi would have done away with Manningham eventually, his job was already done for him. Except Pierre Garcon would not have been his choice to bring in as the number 1 receiver on the team. You add his $8.2M contract and Rantisi already knew Garcon had to go. Rantisi traded Garcon to the Packers for Randall Cobb. (Packers trade: WR Randall Cobb, DE Ryan Pickett, 7.218 - 49ers trade: WR Pierre Garcon, RB Kendal Hunter, 2.63) Rantisi was willing to give up a 2nd round selection in order to bring in his slot receiver. No sleep was lost at letting Garcon go.

GM Rantisi remained patient when it came to finding his number 1 wideout. After remaining in occasional contact with GM PSG of the Green Bay Packers, a tag and trade was in the works. The original offer on the table for premier receiver Greg Jennings was the 62nd pick of the draft. In short, the agreement came down to the 48th overall draft selection for Greg Jennings. What did this mean? The 49ers were willing to part ways with one of their four 2nd round draft selections (all from trade), in order to secure their number one wide receiver. This meant that the 49ers had to take on Jennings' $10.5M contract. GM Rantisi made sure he had enough cap space to compensate for the addition of Greg Jennings, applying the franchise tag to safety Dashon Goldson ($6.9M), as well as having enough left over for free agency and the draft.

All in all, more could be said about the decisions that were made and why they were made, but below will show a short summary on why each player received a roster spot. Rantisi felt that he had to keep as many players as he could from the 2012 season, but those who would serve a roll and purpose. Also, he felt that bringing back a handful of players who were impending free agents was needed. (Isaac Sopoaga, Dashon Goldson, Brian Jennings (LS), Joe Looney (Practice Squad))

    Offense:

    Quarterback -
    1) Alex Smith - chosen to be starter after Kapernick trade
    2) Mike Glennon -
big arm, tall, 4th round steal - pocket mobility is his weakness
    3) Case Keenum -
HUGE college numbers, could serve as a viable #3 QB

    Runningback -
    1) Maurice Jones Drew -
After Frank Gore trade, needed to bring in another bruiser at RB
    2) LaMichael James -
    offensive weapon, big play ability
    3
) Rashad Jennings - MJD's back up in Jacksonville, good size, should serve as #2 RB if MJD needs a break
    4) Bruce Miller (FB)

    Wide Receiver -
    1) Greg Jennings -
brought in via tag and trade as #1 receiver, 49ers felt he was undervalued around the league, thought it was a steal
    3) Randall Cobb (Slot) -
great young receiver, promising career ahead of him, offensive weapon, will prove to be a great asset for Alex Smith
    5) Donald Jones -
added depth, solid back up numbers with Buffalo in 2012

    Wide Receiver -
    2) Eric Decker -
#2 receiver brought in from Denver, should be a good compliment opposite side of Greg Jennings
    4) Keenan Allen -
Yet another weapon for QB Smith, can learn behind 3 great receivers, will be used in 4 receiver sets to spread defenses out
    6) Marcus Davis -
Great size, could be a break out player, solid 7th round selection

    Tight End -
    1) Vernon Davis -
What more can be said? One of the best Tight Ends in the league
    2) Chris Gragg -
A big, physical receiver who is working on his blocking, liked that both aspects of his game are improving
    3) Michael Hoomanawanui -
    added depth, primarily a blocker

    Right Tackle -
    1) Anthony Davis -
    starter
    2) Brennan Williams -
slipped to the 6th round, 49ers thought it was a slight steal

    Right Guard -
    1) Jah Reid -
Would have liked to address this position but Reid will have to suffice, received in trade for a 5th round pick, solid value
    2) Jeff Baca -
drafted for depth as a back up

    Center -
    1) Jonathan Goodwin -
cap is slightly high, but no other solid centers were available
    2) Braxston Cave -
drafted for depth and as back up

    Left Guard -
    1) Mike Iupati -
    starter
    2) J.C. Tretter -
    back up

    Left Tackle -
    1) Joe Staley -
    starter
    2) Don Barclay -
should be placed as back-up right tackle but has more experience than Brennan Williams

    Defense:

    Right Defensive End -
    1) Derek Wolf -
Replaicing an old Justin Smith, GREAT young player, 40 tackles and 6 sacks in his rookie year last year with Denver, STUD
    2) Margus Hunt -
62nd overall in the draft and it could be a huge steal, projected as a late 1st rounder, placed as back up but is expected to tear it up in the future

    Nose Tackle -
    1) Johnathan Hankins -
noted as the starter but could be benched for long time Nose Tackle Sopoaga, it will depend on how Hankins game develops early in the year
    2) Isaac Sopoaga -
re-signed to remain with the team and help support Hankins, Hankins tends to slow down late in games, good to have veteran depth

    Left Defensive End -
    1) Ray McDonald -
Solid starter, many suitors, never traded him
    2) Sylvester Williams -
fell to 42nd overall in draft, was a steal, Williams add another big body on the defensive line, should be a stud

    Right Outside Linebacker -
    1) Aldon Smith -
    STUD, premier pass rusher
    2) Dezmon Moses -
4 sacks as an undrafted free agent with Green Bay, adds needed depth

    Right Inside Linebacker -
    1) Patrick Willis -
STUD, best middle linebacker in the League
    2) Desmond Bishop -
One of the better middle linebackers in the league, 49ers were ecstatic to sign Bishop for the league minimum salary, could easily be a starter

    Left Inside Linebacker -
    1) NaVorro Bowman -
STUD, one of the better middle linebackers in the league
    2) Jasper Brinkley -
Added Depth, Started for the Vikings in 2012, backing up Bowman, could start

    Left Outside Linbacker -
    1) Melvin Ingram -
Young stud, rookie season with the Chargers was average, high hopes for Igram in San Fran, part of the Kapernick trade
    2) Jerry Hughes -
young, played with Colts in 2012, put up solid numbers

    Right Cornerback -
    1) Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie -
see him more as a #2 but still very confident in his game
    3) Johnthan Banks -
Backing up Cromartie, first selection for the 49ers, adds more talent and depth at the position, physical
    5) Cassius Vaughn -
adds depth, decent numbers with the Colts in 2012

    Left Cornerback -
    2) Carlos Rogers -
Rogers may feel pressure of Banks if his performance slips
    4) Chris Culliver -
added depth, familiarity with the team
    6) Nickell Robey -
49ers love Robey, young stud out of USC, although very undersized - he's very physical

    Strong Safety -
    1) Donte Whitner -
    starter
    2) Kurt Coleman -
former starter with the Eagles, will back up Whitner, brings experience

    Free Safety -
    1) Dashon Goldson -
Franchise tagged, physical, great player, asset to the defense
    2) Brandon Taylor -
young, not much experience, added to be a back up, 49ers wanted to address 1 more safety at this position
