Personally I see the "throwing in to traffic" issue as having a lot to do with him adjusting to the speed of the game. Absolutely no reason to be legitimately concerned yet.

not disappointing at all to me. it would have been a nice surprise if he had grabbed the starting role, but he still is pretty raw when it comes to starting as a QB. if we only had options like John Beck, a broken Chad Pennington or Chad Henne, then you could envision throwing Tannehill into the fire, but I don't see the need with Garrard and Moore on the roster.

Yup. Say what you want about Moore and Garrard, but they're hardly scrub opposition for QB like you'd find in CLE, NY, etc.

I am not disappointed, it is exactly what I thought would happen.

That that I wasn't hoping that Ryan would surprise me and dominate the competition.

I would much rather Garrard or Moore start and let the rookie come in for clean up duty late in games. Best way for him to get experience.

Not a major surprise. Our best option to win games is going to lie with either Moore or Garrard for this season. Let Tannehill marinate a bit before tossing him on the grill.

This is the result of a few OTA's we're talking about... not training camp. This might look completely different a month from now. How many times have we looked at players we thought would emerge to only find out something else in TC/Preseason.

BTW, I'm still around and hope everyone is well, I just don't post unless I'm saying something that hasn't already been said! :)

Why is a second-string beat writer's opinion--not even analysis, just opinion--being presented as fact?

Also, we already knew Tannehill was unlikely to start this season, because Philbin and Ireland already said this.

Not sure why they (Rotoworld) considers it "mildly concerning". If I were a back-up QB at Texas A&M I'd probably know the system better than Moore or Garrard also. But If were going to compete as a starter in the NFL, I'd think my path would be more dependent on me getting used to the physical and mental speed of NFL defenses and my ability to iron out my own weaknesses.

Never expected him to challenge this year. He could make strides, but he was always a developmental guy coming out. The game still has to slow down for him. I think the national media assumed he'd be a factor due to the Sherman/offense angle.

Now if he's still not ready in 2013, then we begin to worry.

If Ryan doesn't mount a more serious campaign in training camp, then yeah I'll be a little bit disappointed. I don't see why anyone wouldn't be. He's a #8 overall pick, came in knowing the playbook, is being coached by the same guys that coached him in college, and he's a physical dynamo. That's usually a recipe for day one starter. His lack of experience is the counter to that and I get it, I wouldn't start him this year either...but I do expect him to make a serious run at the job. So far, we're led to believe he hasn't really done that. But I agree with HulkFish, these are just OTAs. Training camp matters more.

I'm not expecting the guy to start. However, I think this article needed to be written after seeing Tannehill play in at least one preseason game. A lot can change during training camp.

Brian Biggane's note that Tannehill is not really in the running for the job is not at all 'sensationalist journalism'.

However, y'all somehow missed the note at the bottom of Biggane's post where he outright accuses Joe Philbin of lying because he attributed Brian Hartline's absense from practice as a "personal matter" rather than telling the truth about him having an appendectomy. THAT, is the definition of sensationalist journalism.

I believe HIPAA laws prevent Philbin from even saying so much as Hartline having a "private medical issue". He can't disclose that there's anything wrong with Hartline medically unless he has permission from Hartline. I'm guessing football players have it in their contracts that football related medical issues can be disclosed publicly (hence injury reports, surgery announcements, etc)...but since this was a non-football surgery then I don't think Joe Philbin was even allowed to say more than Hartline having some personal matters to attend to. Biggane owes Philbin an apology, IMO. That would be the most sensible and honorable thing to do.

I've said since before the draft that I hope Tannehill's is not in the running for the starting job. IMO it is never in the rookie QB's best interest to make him the day 1 starter. Sometimes they overcome it and sometimes the team has no choice, but there's no advantage to the player. The smartest and safest choice is always to have the sit for at least half the year, preferably the whole first year.

As for being disappointed, I'm not at all. By this point, I wanted to see some impressive throws/plays and we've heard of those. My fear going in was that Garrard would show age/injury effects and that Moore would continue to be a horrible practice player so the team would feel they had no choice. Even then, I would be disappointed in Philbin if he bowed to the pressure and started Tannehill. My hope going forward is that Tannehill continues flashing, but that Garrard and/or Moore are good and consistent enough that there's no push to rush Tannehill in. Hopefully, there will be enough winning and the QB play is not considered the cause for the losses so that there's no more than the occasional whisper of wonder about whether Tannehill might energize things or come in and be even better.

As the Tuna once said you look to see if a pup bites to see if you have a good dog .From all reports Tanny has had several spectacular eye popping plays mixed in with the intercepcions and bad plays.

He may be inconsistent but the young pup does have a bite.

Former players Henne and Beck did not show much bite in their debuts

I disagree that it's always better for the player to sit. I think some players need to sit and some need to get out there and learn by doing.

In this case I absolutely want Ryan Tannehill to be "in the running" for the job because I want him to show that he's good enough to be in the running for it. I would prefer he doesn't start, though.

I think some players learn by doing, but even they are better off (ie. greater chance of future success) if they sit for a year before they start learning on the job.

OK. So we've determined that maybe he isn't Marino, Namath, Manning, Unitas or Tarkenton. We won't even know he isn't Marino until the sixth game. I'd chill.

I still feel that the Dolphins should make every effort to do what is necessary to trade up in the 2013 draft in an effort to draft Barkley with the first pick in next years draft. I have felt all along that Tannehill will never be anything but a low level starter in the NFL and it would not surprise me in the least if he doesn't end up being nothing but a long term backup in the NFL.

I wasn't crazy about the Dolphins drafting Weeden with the eight pick in the draft because of his age, but I feel Weeden will turn out to be a much better pro QB than Tannehill.

The reality is you won't see this team pick a QB in the first round until at least 2015.
So instead of worrying about Matt Barkley, you should keep your eyes on the likes of Teddy Bridgewater and Blake Bell.

Matt Moore was easily and solidly the 2nd best qb in the AFC East behind a first ballot hofer who had a great season even by his own standards. I have always liked Garrard too. One thing I cannot take again, is a slow *** start, and finding our rhythms when the playoffs are no longer a possibility. I don't care who starts week one, but they better perform.
