According to Sports Illustated, the Dolphins also signed Les Brown, an aspiring tight end who never played college football and spent the past two years working for an accounting firm. Brown, 6-4, played basketball at NAIA Westminster College in Utah and impressed NFL teams at BYU's Pro Day last month by running a 4.44 in the 40 and displaying pass-catching skills. Brown, who played football and basketball in high school (2006 grad), got permission to audition at BYU because his brother plays there. Dolphins scouts were impressed and recommended him to Jeff Ireland, who signed him. It's a no-risk move, with Miami having nothing to lose.

Wouldn't this turn out to be a great story if he turns into a star TE for the Dolphins...

This kind of shows the state of the Dolphin organization under the leadership of Ireland. A few years ago, the Dolphins passed on Jimmy Graham who was right in their backyard and who had actually played one season of football at UM. Instead the Dolphins now sign a free agent basketball player who has been working in an accounting firm for the last two years and who never played football at all in college.

While I understand that there is really no risk in this signing. It just irks me that Ireland passes on players who actually have shown they can play the game of football and instead signs someone who hasn't suited up in a football uniform since he was in high school, six years ago. I suspect Brown will be one of the first cuts of the preseason while Graham will once again be a Pro Bowl TE in the NFL in 2012.

That pass was a Parcells thing. He liked him, but he specifically said after that draft that "you don't take TEs that early". I think that Graham was one of those Parcells draft projects he had every year where when he has a player he likes, he makes the call on when to make the pick. That pass showed the state of the Dolphins under Parcells and tells us nothing about the state under Ireland.

Yeah that's some impressive gains in 10 months. Could just be creatine and hard work. I have to say I'm impressed.

Do we know that Ireland wanted Graham? Or did Ireland, being a Parcells-guy, agree with him.

We have no idea what Ireland thought. That's why I said that pass tells us nothing about Ireland.

We don't know and can't prove it either way that's why you can only grade Ireland on his one year in charge.

As for Brown, he's obviously a no-risk long shot. He's the kind of pick-up that I don't criticize Ireland for as long as he's not churning the bottom of the roster to the extent that it's hurting our STs. I thought that was a problem until a couple of seasons ago, but not last season. Maybe he did so much churning b/c the bottom of the roster was one of the few areas he did have final say in? I do think that video shows an extreme change, but it's not impossible. Did you guys ever see that video where some guy tried to duplicate one of those before/after shots for a typical workout product infomercial? He did the after shot first and the before shot 24 hrs later. There was a little photoshop, but not much. He showed the pics with and without the photoshop. He made sure he was pumped up for the "after" shot and then basically gorged himself for the "before" shot. He was pretty ripped in the "after" and looked soft and doughy in the "before".

He wasn't even that good of a basketball player, averaged 2.4 pts a game his senior year at a very small school. I was expecting to see him tear it up somewhat on the hard court for such an "athlete".

Even if he did use steroids, HGH, or whatever, they do not make you stronger or more muscular just by merely using them. He still would have needed to work his butt off in the weight room. Steroids basically help to recover faster from the workout, allowing increased workout intensity and frequency.

I do know high quality creatine can work very well too. It does seem to give a person more of a smooth look, rather than ripped or vascular because it causes you to retain more water in the muscle tissue. There is no doubt you can pack on weight and strength very quickly with good creatine incorporated into your diet and workout regimen.

He's talking about in that draft Parcells really wanted graham but was waiting for the next round thinking he was gonna be there. Then when Payton snatched him, he called him up and said he picked a great player that he was about to grab.

I guess we're hoping he's another Antonio Gates (who was a college basketball player, with no college football experience, but became one of the best NFL tight ends ever).

If we can sign an accountant then the Bills can sign Williams and Anderson.

    The Apocalypse is upon us.

An accountant could help us in the long run.

He just didn't adapt to the increasing value of the TE. You see the same thing with those arguing that 8 is to high for Tannehill or that think Weeden will be available in the second. Matchup players and QBs will go higher now b/c of the changes in the game and in the CBA.

He's drafted TE higher than Graham was taken, so I don't buy that he inherently doesnt value the position. I think Graham was just a case of them having bad intel.

Jimmy Graham was drafted at the end of the 3rd round, and was the last non-compensatory pick of the round. It shouldn't boggle your mind at all, because it wasn't far off reality.
