So because he's waiting a week it's a big deal? The article says the first two weeks is really only strength and conditioning. I doubt waiting that one week matters much.

hmm, expecting to sign someone maybe?

NFL 32 featured Omark saying Philbin was taking extra time to..wait for it...wait for it....

    "evaluate film from 2011"

Of course the chuckle heads hated that so "the only real way to evaluate players is on the practice field!!!"

it's not just weight room stuff, you can address your team in the meeting rooms and start to convey your leadership and philosophy to your team, and to me an extra week in the weight room is something I would rather have than not..Is this a big deal?, no, I'd just like to know why other new coaches are not waiting, and he has chosen too wait..

Maybe they want/need the coaches to participate in the scouting/pro day workouts/etc for the upcoming draft prospects this week? Maybe Philbin is working with guys like Tannenhill/Weeden/etc this week?

I was in the Tampa area yesterday and heard Shiano's presser, and how he couldn't sleep, and that he was chomping at the bit, he explained how he had them all in the meeting room relaying the message, then how he let the trainers have them..yeah, it's just a bit puzzling, but Iam sure he has a logical explanation, you know coaches, an extra week to spend time with their team in the meeting rooms is like gold..?

maybe it just speaks to Philibin's level-headedness and that he's not going to overreact just because he's a new coach. He believes in a system that works (hopefully)

I can't say that I'm all that disappointed that Joe Philbin isn't like all these other meatheads that focus on working harder instead of working smarter, endlessley accelerating work ethic which doesn't seem to result in an increase in the quality of football being played.

I say trust him. That's my vote. But I think it's valid to beg the question of why.

I agree with CK, but other new coaches havent just lost a son, and maybe his family is having a hard time, like his other children, his wife and himself, I dont know about how others feel but i cant thing of a more tramatic event in someones life than losing a child. I recently lived through losing a 24 year old nephew, and watched my sister and brother in law have to go throught that..it isnt over in a few months. So i guess i can give coach a break if he wants to take a week off.

While totally understandable, I would be surprised if it really had anything to do with that. I think it's exactly as padre31 says, Philbin would rather not get everyone together all half-cocked before he's done with his 2011 film review and has a better idea on specific direction as it pertains to individual players and the team as a whole.

I know Philbin is allowed 11 OTAs instead of just 10 OTAs, and I was pretty sure he planned on burning one of them before the Draft, which not every team gets to do, I don't think.

    That strikes me as smart.

Totally agree with this, just many factors can play to things, i think sometimes we can forget these guys are human too, have the same family issues. Makes me respect coach even more that he can consintrate on his work and move forward.

But yes i would rather have him studing film understanding who he has, not just in players but in coaches that have remained on staff from the previous staff as well.

I think DJ and others are right to question it, but at the same time based on what I've heard out of Joe Philbin it also seems to fit right in with his "work smarter, not harder" approach.
Offseason workout programs for teams with new coaches can run for nine weeks within a 12-week period. The other teams have a 10-week window with which to get in nine weeks. The programs cannot exceed four days a week and must be conducted Monday through Friday. Offseason workout programs have three phases with different rules for each. They are based on strength and conditioning, individual instruction and organized team activities.
The above is the rule as I understand it. So if the fins start this week or next it wont really make a difference at all as they will still get in the same amount of OTAs as every other NFL team.

It appears that all teams have nine weeks. Did the media jump to conclusions and many people follow again. :omg:

That's good news if it's just a rearrangement of a certain amount of days, and like some others have stated, he's wrapping up some loose ends before he picks his times...

All teams get the same exact amount of time regardless of when they choose to start the program. Now I ask you, start a week later or end a week earlier ? If they started today then they release the players one week earlier then the rest of the teams. That means the time between OTAs ending and summer camp beginning, is one week more. The way Philbin is doing it by starting the regular time, the team does not get the extra week between OTAs and summer camp. Smart man. Would rather give them an extra week now because an extra week at the end of OTAs is a lot of time to have off before summer camp starts.

Players have been lifting at the facility anyway all off season, this is not news, this is Armando spanking the monkey as usual. If he ever lost his job Armando would have a hard time working at Duncan Dounts making the holes in the donuts. He HAS TO have something on his boss in order to keep his job, has to.

Dolphins could dig up Vince Lombardi and Armando would do an article on how much he smells.

It also fits in with like a major holiday next Sunday and a lot of players want 4 or 5 days off prior to it to be with their families ? Its called Easter. Someone posted that 70% of the players live in Florida, thats bunk. 70% may OWN homes in Florida but the majority of the team lives outside the State of Florida when off.

Just sayin Armando is a pin head.

IIRC, the CBA limits the amount of pad practices and other types of practices you can have. If that's true, he might be preserving them for later.

EDIT: Next time I'm gonna read the thread first.

That sounds like when Sparano came here.

I don't see it as a big deal.

Does this mean that players can now get playbooks and talk to the coaches about football

Perhaps Dr Phil is waiting until after the draft, to bring in everyone at once?? Give the drafted rookies an opportuity to start day one with the veterans?

only Philbin knows the why of anything.
there are always reasons for an intelligent coach to act or not in any given situation.
don't believe we're dealing with a Sparano this time round.

looking forward to a few surprises & a great season for Miami
