Jeff Karsten, ladies and gentlemen, back to reality. It's almost like no one could have predicted a pitcher getting extremely lucky with balls in play and not missing any bats would eventually get hammered. Who would have thought it?

Come on CashInFist, tell me how wrong I am now. Granted it was only 1 game but if you're going to call me out when he pitches well I'm certainly going to call you out when he doesn't. His ERA climbed up over a half a run tonight alone.

Update: Jeff Karstens' last 5 starts his ERA is 6.75. His ERA before those 5 starts was 2.28, now it's 3.12. Not that ERA is the be all or end all stat to judge a pitcher but that was the only stat in Karstens' line that stuck out like a sore thumb, as all his other stats just didn't match up with the ERA. His FIP and xFIP sit at 4.37 and 3.84 so look for that ERA to keep rising. It's called regression and it was not unexpected.

So who wants to defend Karstens now? I'm still here....

and he would have been hurt for the stretch run as well......

Jeff Karstens (shoulder) will rejoin the Pirates rotation on September 13 for a start against the Cardinals.

It was reported earlier this week that Karstens would return on September 19, but evidently he has progressed ahead of schedule. The right-hander, who has missed his past two turns due to shoulder fatigue, will be part of a six-man rotation for the Bucs down the stretch. Karstens holds a 3.32 ERA and 1.19 WHIP this season but sported marks of 7.46 and 1.74, respectively, in August.
The exception to the general rule on closers, Ozzie Guillen admitted, is Mariano Rivera. "Rivera," Ozzie said of his longtime nemesis from the American League, "is from another planet."

The media seem to love to use that bad call in the 19 inning game vs. Atlanta as the Pirates turning point. That's not the reason they declined but I've seen it mentioned in a couple of articles.

Typical media. Let's not actually look at the roster, talent level and stats, as well as the other teams in the division, to see that the team was simply playing over their heads case in point look at All Star Kevin Corriea, Jeff Karstens and Charlie Morton just to name a few. Remember earlier in the year when the media was using Morton's change in delivery the reason for his success? Well now I read an article claiming his new delivery is hurting him because it feels weird to him. The media is just silly must of the time. Bottom line it was only a matter of time the Pirates were going to fade, whether they won that game against the Braves or not.

Jeff Karstens' ERA is now 3.45, well over a full run higher than it was on July 20th when it was at 2.28. Since July 20th Karstens has pitched 41.2 innings while giving up 31 runs, 58 hits, 30 Ks and 13 walks, that's a 6.77 ERA during that time frame. Yeah, he's still not a very good pitcher.

    Ouch.....A-Rods injury....

Charlie Morton underwent surgery Monday to repair a torn labrum in his left hip.

Morton is expected to be sidelined for six months, which could put him at risk for missing the start of the 2012 season. The 27-year-old right-hander went 10-10 with a 3.83 ERA and 110/77 K/BB ratio over 29 starts with the Pirates this season and will be arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter.

    God this thread was hilarious.

Kudos to Ray for keeping his cool when that clearly homer Pirates was insulting him at every turn. Clearly that guy owes him an apology.

Oh this thread is comedy at its best. It's probably my favorite "debate" of all time here, just barely beating out the "Francoeur is/isn't good" debate, although that San Francisco Giants WS thread from 2010 was pretty fun too for different reasons. Clearly my baseball credibility took a big hit in this thread huh?

And yes I am still waiting for my apology....

They're not better than either the Cardinals, Reds or Brewers, so I'm going to say no. But I can see them fighting the Cubs for 4th place though.

Burnett makes Pittsburgh the favorite out of the NL now.
