Unfortunately this article doesn't have the answer... but it's a good place to start this discussion. I am completely flabbergasted. Looking at what is out there, we're either going after Becht, whom we have ties to obviously or there is a trade in the works. But if a trade is in the works, why drop down to two tight ends and lose any leverage you may have in trade negotiations with the other team? Article even mentions Sparano bringing up the fact that Martin was out backup longsnapper and one of the better ones in the league. I don't get it. http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sport...sweblog+(Miami+Dolphins+|+Sun-Sentinel+Blogs)
Spancer Havner is the much talked about favorite, but I still don't get cutting Martin BEFORE you have the player you want on the team...
So we're going after Becht or a trade? No other TEs could possibly be our targets? No chance we plan to just roll with 2 TEs? I'm glad you know the plan.
Sure other TE's could be targeted, but looking at the waiver list from today, does anything there make you forget what we had in David Martin? Do you forget how much we missed Martin last year?? Only to bring him back, to see him running open in the preseason a couple of times only to see Henne not get him the ball. No chance to roll with two tight ends... if past is any indication of future tendencies... we have never had just two tight ends on the 53 since this regime took over. Hey, maybe we're converting Marshall to tight end...
I was really baffled by this cut. Martin would have given a lot of flexibility in the passing game and would have helped Henne a lot, IMO.
and don't give me that noise about us being worried about his injury history... who is our backup quarterback?
might be a $ issue. if vets are on the team by a certain day their contract is guaranteed. prolly cut him, avoid that day, re-sign him. no $ necessary. unless that has already passed.
yeah but Martin was making the vet minimum... are we really that worried about guaranteeing the vet min and possibly losing that due to injury? If true, it doesn't bode well for a guy like Ronnie Brown to get a new deal this year.
This move makes no sense unless we acquire a tight end. Already without our second rounder, I don't see the FO giving up enough to acquire Greg Olsen, but I could see them making a move for Martellus Bennett who would cost much less. I really don't see Spencer Havner being more valuable as the familiar David Martin, and definitely not Anthony Becht who is invisible in the passing game. We missed Martin a ton last season, then we bring him back and axe him in favor of.... nobody knows? Better not be John Nalbone. I don't see enough in him to even warrant a spot as the third tight end.
Who gives a crap about what he did under Cam and his system on a 1-15 team? Under THIS system..he was very good. he performed well in camp. period. He was cut. To save money on a possible guaranteed contract, apparently. They bring him back in 2 weeks I bet.
Just somethin ive been thinking about....... I know there has been talk about how the two tight end formation is something that Henne excels out of, but when you put those two out on the field together, your putting 2 of your lesser talented players on the field at the same time...maybe the reason for the release is because we wanna run a more ''power spread look'' with the three receiver set...Think Michael Bush/Petrino/ Louisville type look... This would benefit us in 2 ways imo, #1 being that ronnie brown's skillset would absolutely love it, and be dominate out of it...He already loves the space the wildcat presents him, The power spread look would give him similar space advantages to run and catch the ball..He's just a better back when he's not in traditional proset formations...I like the idea of the black demon gettin some space as well in his rerbith. and #2, we all know Henne and his right arm would love the idea of shotgun formation, 3 receiver set looks with ronnie by his side... This offense may be going places.. The hybrid.
Im thinking we HAVE to be going after something here because it just simply doesnt make sense to let martin go.
With labor unrest on the horizon and big bucks shelled out to Marshal and Dansby, yes, it makes sense to save pennies wherever else possible. Contracts signed after week 1 are non-guaranteed. The plan could be to roll with Fasano and Nalbone against the Bills, then re-sign Martin. Makes sense from a penny pinching perspective. Alternatively, maybe David Martin just can't play any more, guys. Why? Bennett is more of a receiving TE than a blocker, and Sparano highly values blocking from the TE. (Henning does too, if leading the NFL in max protect sets in 2009 is any indication.) Just because Bennett is a Cowboy doesn't automatically mean this FO is interested in him: after all, he wasn't drafted until Parcells had set up camp in Miami and traded for Fasano, thus leaving the #2 TE job in Dallas open, thus causing Jerry Jones to draft Bennett.
we're probably gonna be running the ball from 2/3 wr sets this year. youre allowed 5 skill players per formation. polite will see a lot of downs. marshall will see every down. fasano will see every down. there will be a tailback on every down. here's our basic 1te sets.... ronnie/polite/fasano/marshall/hartline ronnie/fasano/marshall/hartline/bess ronnie/ricky/fasano/marhsall/hartline
As far as I know, David Martin caught zero passes this preseason. His preseason highlight was a block. Maybe he's just not that good anymore and had us all fooled.
The entire team was bad in 2007, and the direction was even worse. When we last saw a healthy David Martin he was a major contributor to a division winning playoff team. A poor season in 2007 doesn't bother me when there was a major rebound in 2008. The other way around would be different, but this isn't the other way around. I saw him open quite a bit and Henne couldn't get him the football. He looked to be back to his old form or at least very close to it. Because we need a seam busting pass catching tight end. The same reason they brought back David Martin would be the same reason they'd look into bringing in another receiving threat to replace him.
Its been discussed in other threads. Players were not as surprised as us about his release, reporting several injury issues. He could return after game 1. The problem I have with it is that our line seems to have regressed since last year. We max protected with the tight ends a ton. Now we are going three and four wide? Henne better get used to getting the ball out in less than 2 seconds.
Oddly enough that seemed to be one of those key points they focused on Henne with in TC. Maybe we are moving to more of a spread style offense? IDK...so much information over that past day my head hurts.
ummm because David Martin played with our starting quarterback in the preseason and Nalbone did not? As to the rest of your post, I will ignore it as being completely stupid.
last I checked this was a message board where we give our opinions and support them as best we can with facts. If we just all went along with what the front office was doing, this place sure would be boring...
The thing is that its an uncapped year and he probably wasnt getting paid that much anyway. And you're gambling big time if someone else picks him up in 2 weeks.
From the a fans view not sure how, initially, you could act like the Martin cut was not surprising. There was a tweet that came out stating Martin was working through injuries in which case the cut makes more sense. However that tweet came after, not before the cut. Why is it that if someone is upset with a cut by the team they are "whiners" or have sore butts? Besides if people didn't post their thoughts/feelings on things, you wouldn't be renowned as such an understanding well rounded individual.
My guess is the people making the decisions might be a hell of a lot smarter than some fans that hang out and whine about the team on a message board. Like I said before David Martin was never really that good to begin with and now the world has to come to an end because he has been cut. The second we have an issue with the TE the same people will be saying see we should have kept David Martin. It is not hard to see the reasoning behind the complaining if you look deep enough but knee jerkers aren't that smart. You live off initial reaction and then try to prove it by some form of see I told you so. If you look at the big picture maybe it all makes sense but that is not the issue here because it is way to easy to cry about it. It is what makes a portion of this fanbase ridiculously inexcusable and impossible to tolerate.
I have yet to see one post saying the world has come to an end regarding this. I really don't see the issue with someone posting their discontent for a particular person getting cut/released. Nobody is questioning the intellect of the FO, and nobody is getting the torches/mob ready to run them out of town. Well except dorfdad. As for our fanbase, there are worse types.
But you have to understand the thread is about David fuggin' Martin for christ sake... You would think we cut Gonzalez in his prime
I agree that they were many knee jerks to the cut, but I don't think it got to out of hand. I thought for sure the Pat White threads would be littered all over the site, but I think for the most part, the fan base on this site has done pretty well.
david martin had one great year where if he had that same exact year this year we would all be so happy because it would indicate a successful offense that probably ensures a playoff bearth. i do think he will be resigned, but will he have that exact impact?
I'm asking why you're targeting Bennett specifically. He hasn't been very good, and was about to lose his job to John Phillips. There's no "we coached him in Dallas" link, because no one on this staff coached Bennett at any point in their careers. Greg Olsen would be a better bet, but we've shown no interest. The FO thinks Fasano is the seam buster we need.
The two TE sets worked well with Pennington's skillset, but it was a big congestion nightmare for Henne. Everything was short gains because our receivers had a cornerback with safety help on them. I agree too that the FO must be looking at opening up the offense more with 3+ receiver sets and spreading out the defense with the surprise play that Moore/Wallace has given them.
tell me what Nalbone did this preseason with Henne at quarterback that deserves him staying instead of Martin? There is no answer you can come up with because Nalbone didn't play with Henne this preseason.
Not intentionally being a dick, but what exactly did Martin do with Henne this preseason that makes him irreplaceable?
Apparently he had several injuries that he was nursing and they felt he is not the same player he once was.
he made some great blocks and got open.. he did all he could without actually throwing the ball to himself.
Bennett is going nowhere now that Jon Phillips is out for the season. Personally, I wouldn't trade for Bennett. I don't think he's bright nor is he a hard worker.
And that makes him irreplaceable? I mean yea Nalbone didn't do those things while Henne was in the game, but it's possible he could've just as likely got open and block without catching any passes.
BTW, Omar believes Martin will be back after week 1. Are you going to root against him if that happens Killerphins?
