Crazy and sad. The part about the parents telling her about tying something around her neck is confusing. What was the context in which they told her that? Either way, that's horrible.

Probably "don't do that," the same as being told not to put plastic bags over your head.

I guess. It just sounded fishy. I would never think to tell my daughter, "Hey, don't take something and tie it around your neck and then hang yourself."

Not really something that comes up in the daily flow of conversation. Then again, my daughter only knows 4 words.

it does sound off, but you just CAN'T accuse the parents of murder in something this terrible unless you realllly think you have proof of it. Either way it is a shame. You can make the argument that you don't necessarily 'feel bad' for people who commit suicide as adults (which is debatable, but don't want to get into that here), but you certainly can't argue that this girl knew and fully understood all the consequences of her actions. Don't see how you can't pity her.

Maybe the parents caught her previously tying,or even pretending to tie, something around her neck and they told her how dangerous it was and not to do it.

    Just a thought.

Dr. Clifford Nelson, Oregon's deputy medical examiner, made the suicide determination based on a variety of factors, including interviews with the grief-stricken family. And Dr. Karen Gunson, the chief medical examiner for the state, said that investigators learned that the girl's parents had warned all of their children of the dangers of playing with belts around their necks.

Thats what I originally was thinking. Then I realized the amount of garbage thats on TV these days she might have picked it up that way. Its amazing what young kids comprehend this day and age.

    To some extent, THIS!
Just like you tell your kids not to cross the street without looking first. You just do it.
A very very sad story. My heart genuinely goes out to everybody involved. This is just horrible.

I feel bad that the kid killed herself, but I feel even worse for her poor parents. How horrible must THEY feel?

The mom sends the kid to her room, she tells her, "I'm going to kill myself", she thinks to herself, "yeah right, you're just talking ****".

Then they go up to the room and find that she hung herself.

Completely devastating. They must be thinking about the myriad of things they might have done differently had they known... That's something that a parent could never forget, or never quite forgive themselves for; even though they know they didn't do anything wrong.

I have a six year old little girl who has a hard time tying her shoes, I dont want to speculate becasue its ridiculously sad for one and for two I cant imagine dumb enough parents to murder thier daughter then make it look like a suicide...

All too weird. Horrible news regardless.

My assumption is that she was trying to spite her parents. But, just got in over her head. Maybe didn't even fully understand the repercussions of her actions.

Remember when you were a kid and you threatened to run away. You went and hid for a couple minutes thinking they wouldn't find you. Whole time you thought how sad they would be and they would never punish you again. You got bored and came out before they ever looked though.

She didn't have the opportunity to "come out."

    A really sad story.

Agreed, a 6 year old does not have the mental makeup to hang him/herself.
They may threaten to hold their breath forever or something like that

Which is why I prefer DethMute.

Some of you talk about a 6 year old like you would a dog. They aren't stupid. A 6 year old is more capable of learning than a grown adult.

she didnt need to understand everything. she just needed to know that hanging herself is the end of her life. i think she was old enough to know that.

EDIT: if she didnt know better, then chalk this one up to natural selection.

I mean really? What harm would come from playing with belt around your neck.

The problem comes into play when you secure the other end to something. JMO but this story sounds fishy.

    Colorado Dolfan ...dirty drownin' man?

I have three kids and at one point, while playing innocently, one of my girls ended up with a jump rope around her neck, while playing a game of tug-of-war.

That right there is how kids learn that you can die from things being wrapped around your neck... I agree, though, that kids that young really don't understand the full concept of dying or death. It really just doesn't register to them.

    Sad story either way... :(

I think it's more that kids don't understand the finality or true consequences of death. Sure, they understand that they can die if they do certain things, but they don't fully understand that there is no coming back.

well fortunately this situation took care of itself. we dont have to worry about this problem spreading. the parents are too dumb to keep their kid from offing herself, therefore their kids wont live long enough to reproduce, meaning they are the end of their genetic tree. no more suicidal rugrats.

find me a kid who understands concepts as well as adults. Im also pretty sure there is a big difference between a childs knowledge on death, as opposed to an adult. Also, feel free to find me a child who can even spell suicide let alone knows what it is ....You can just stop replying and admit your original post was bs you know.......
