I need some serious advise guys. Most of you know our situation. Well, we've been moving into the townhouse/condo for a couple of days now and it's SO tedious. Come to find out yesterday that once we're in, we cannot keep our beloved Bean - our chihuahua - and a true member of our family.

I've been to her groomer (she had an overnight visit with her - she said Bean was awesome and very well behaved but her dad said a big nope to another dog). I've been to her vet and posted a flyer with all her good attributes (and there are many) and her picture - nothing yet. It's going to kill us to part with her, but kill us even more if she goes to a home/person/shelter that intends to harm or kill her.

I've been to several chihuahua rescue organizations but they said that with the economy the way it is, they're overloaded with pets and not enough people adopting them.

Any ideas? We can't afford a doggy hotel or a doggy babysitter.

    Thanks all.

    try petfinder.com

Our humane society is a no kill shelter, and chi's are always adopted. Most humane society chapters are no kill. I'll also ask around down here. If you could post her size, weight, age, etc. and maybe a picture that might help.

Will do - thanks. I'll try to find the last pic I posted of her in the pet thread. If not, I'll take a pic with my cell phone, email it to myself and post it here for you. She's SO cute and sweet and loving. BTW - the groomer has a huge dog and said Bean was very well behaved around that dog. So she's got a great temperament. She's 4 years old, she's about 3 inches tall and about 12" inches long. She's a little overweight, but in perfect health, has all her shots and is licensed by the State of NJ and spayed. She's been tested for heartworm and regular worms and is clean. She would be a lucky addition to someone with a very loving family. I'll try petfinder.com first.

Try to do everything you can to keep her. I don't think I could part with a family pet.

    :(

I hope you can find a friend or relative that is trustworthy and willing to take her in, other than that I think Fin D nailed it with petfinder or a no-kill shelter. If I could I'd take the little bugger in a heartbeat.

No - the condo is being graciously donated to us for free because of our impending homelessness situation. It's not for forever but it's somewhere to go until we find somewhere else, and the owner said absolutely no pets in his home.

I wish we could - we just can't and, believe me when I say, Bean is a huge daddy's girl. The funny thing is, the girl we got her from 3 years ago was balling when we took Bean away and begged us to keep in touch and let her visit often. I have sent her thousands of emails with pics of Bean and to invite her over to visit with her, or even to spend the night with Kristin. Promises, always, but never delivered. I sent her an email today to feel her out about the situation. Let's see how, or if, she responds.

He's giving us use of it for free until we find someplace else to go, but there's no time limit. He lives down in South Jersey but my boss is a good friend of his and he's being very generous. And I just started a new job, but until the day care center opens (I'll be the Executive Assistant), I'm only receiving a $25.00 per week stipend (which I did not know until I started). And we need, at the very least, money for gas, so it will suffice until I start full time.

She doesn't eat very much. She's on a vet mandated diet because she's so tiny and 11 pounds. Not really a diet, Lucky, but he asked us to cut down on her food. She eats about a cup of food twice per day and she gets along great with other dogs. She's a dog owners dream - we just cannot keep her.

Well I might have luck finding a temporary home, no guarantees of course, and it would help, if there was some idea of a time frame, like 6 months, etc.

I promise I am not being flippant, but I had no idea there was something as specific as a chihuahua rescue organization.

You'd be amazed at how many breed specific rescue organizations there are. These people truly care about the animals and are always focused on finding homes for their charges. My parents got their ****zu through one.

    Edit: LMAO at ****zu.

For the record Doc, pure breds make up anywhere from 30 to 40% of the homeless/shelter population. Most people don't think that would be the case, since they usually cost more to get at first, but alas...

Ha, my bad. Pure breds in general. Though chis are a big factor right now, considering they're a fad. Of course that also means they get adopted earlier.

Unfortunately, no. Most of the friends have cats and no relatives in the area. This doggy has been my constant companion when I wasn't working since my heart attack. She's an amazing and beautiful animal.

If I can work something out, would you be willing or able to send her to Seattle, Mary?

Gloria is living at her parents now since they live in Arizona most of the year, and she's been making noise about getting a dog since we met. And she LOVES Chihuahuas.

I might even be able to cover the "shipping" if you have a little bit of a grace period, like 10 days or so.

edit: Oh, I just saw something about cats; does Bean not like them?

I would have no problem with that at all Joe. I'd have to look into how to go about it and would definitely need some help with shipping. Oh and about cats - she just ignores them. She's a very laid back, low maintenance doggy.

My wife has contacted a chi rescue in Jersey. Most rescues are at best apprehensive at fostering an animal, because people never actually return to get their animals back. Because of that, she's used the sanctuary's name that she works for to try and smooth over that part of it, and is waiting to hear back (again, no guarantees).

I see that Nabo has offered to take Bean, which is great :hi5:. Just let me know if you'd like us to continue pursuing the fostering avenue or not.

I'll wait till I hear from Joe, but I would love for you to continue down that avenue for fostering if, in fact, Joe and/or Gloria can't take Bean. I've "known" them for years and trust them implicitly. I think you can tell from my desperation that I would love to get Bean back and please tell your wife thank you for looking into that. I would never desert a beloved member of my family. Time frame is tentative, at best, but I would say approximately 6 months as an outside figure.
