Been looking for a dog for awhile and don't know exactly what to get. I am open for suggestions. The dog would also have to be good for an apartment.. Pictures of ur current pets are very much welcomed with info on breed/breeds. Thanks for all of ur help

Apartments aren't really the issue when choosing a dog, its really about your activity level. If your someone who goes for runs or walks here's certain ones to look for, if you're a couch potato there are other things to look for.

I cannot stress enough to consider getting a dog from a shelter.

go humane society or the pound. I actually found a really good looking dog that was part australian cattle dog there. People really like the way he looks even though he isn't pure bred.

Also I'd like to point out that 40% of the dogs in shelters and rescues are pure bred.

People think because a dog was got from a breeder they don't end up in shelters. It just simply isn't the case. If you want a specific breed, I guarantee you there is a rescue for the specific breed.

Great apartment dog. Small enough to be able to exercise in a smaller home. Big dog attitude that they will assert on anyone/thing that they deem a threat to you. Lovable and friendly as well.

Just take care that they don't jump off of beds, couches etc. I have sets of steps for them in my house so they don't risk back injury.

Rescuing a dog was the first option and i dont care about a pure breed or not. I only want a dog i connect with. I also realize that just about all dogs can live in a dogpartments but some are better suited for yards and not apartments. Have been looking for over 2 months and i do my home work.

Yep, rescues and shelters are the way to go. Not only do you get a great pet, you also get the extra added bonus of knowing you saved this animal's life.

Here's a link to help you with your decision. http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselector.do

I have a 3 year old Bichon Frise, and he's the greatest dog on the planet. He's the sweetest, snuggliest dog you could ever meet. Bichons are GREAT "people dogs", they will be by your side always, like a little shadow. They do need regular activity - I take him for walks on my in-line skates in the summer, "regular" walks in the winter - with plenty of tug-o-war and fetch the toy in between. And they need to be groomed at least every other day (just a few times a week it you keep them cut short).

If you like happy, cuddly little dogs, Bichons are the way to go, IMO.

If you live in a apartment, you need to check out the restricted breeds for that apt. Some apts. don't allow certain breeds of dogs. Also, not ALL dogs are suited for apts.

The humane society or rescue dogs can help you in anyway. They won't push off a dog on you just to get rid of it.

Also, make sure you are looking for a 4 legged dog, not a 2 legged one:shifty:

Ok great, that opens up a whole lot of options. Now, what do you want in a dog?

(Sorry for all these questions, but the breeds are so different, its important to find out things to make a good match.)

I have a pitt/boxer 60lb that has the personality of a lightening bolt flying around everywhere. Id stay away from a dog like this. I had a Boston terrier and personally I would go with that, they are cute and one of the smartest breeds, easily trainable too.

Did you click my link and do the little questionnaire? What dogs did it recommend?

I'm tellin' ya, man. A Bichon would be perfect for you. They're the definition of playful and loving. PLUS they don't shed.

Going to echo the dachsund suggestion.

I just went through giving away 3 Brittany Spaniel pups and it was tough finding the right homes for them. A lot of folks wanted them but the breed has certain consistent qualities that rules out some homes over others. All breeds have certain personalities that make some dogs more compatible with their homes.

A Dachsund is an excellent suggestion for a single guy living in an apartment who is absent for significant periods of time each day.

Dogs are by far my favorite pet. Once I decide which house or condo I want to buy I want to get a bulldog and a retriever immediately after. Im hoping they will be available at the shelter when I go.... :)

I'd check out terrier breeds and mixes.

One of my favorites is the Boston Terrier. They can be a little rambunctious, not Jack Russel crazy, but still pretty active. They are hyper intelligent and very loving. A lot of people may say they think they're ugly or weird looking, but assure you few breeds garner more attention when you have them out.

I swear to you, women swoon to my dog.

No, there are breeds which simply cannont tolerate being left alone. All the exercise in the world won't change that.

Sort of. It's really about individual temperament.

There are breeds though, that for the most part, must have exercise.

Yes Eric you are the best mutt ever.

Boxer or Pitt would need more room and I dont have it. Boston Terrior was on the short list i came up with. Really love the Dachsund, Cocker Spaniel, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Scottish Terrior, and Bichon is the short list.

The dog is not for just me.

You can't really have other people pick out a dog for you.

You have to go see some live and see which breed seems to hit a spot inside you.

It's like asking what flavor of ice cream everyone likes and deciding which would taste good to you.

There are lots of small dogs that do very well in apartment settings.

We have a pug like the dog in Men In Black.

I fought vehemently against getting this breed of dog but having one I've come to learn they are some of the most loyal and playful dogs you can have.

Just go out and see the different breeds in a shelter. Play around with them and see which one strikes you.

I would say get a Lab but you live in an apartment so that may be too small for one. They are great dogs but they need alot of exercise and room to run around.

Maybe you should get a daschund, they shed like hell and they're stubborn but they're good dogs for an apartment.

My son and his family have 2 of these also. The brown one looks just like theirs. They have a dappled black and white one that we all call the devil dog, she gets into everything and eats all of our flowers.
They are good watch dogs for them.

Don't get a dog that is known to shed... My last dog was a lab/rot mix and he shed everywhere, all the time. It was terrible... Great dog (great Frisbee dog too) but the shedding was frustrating. You have to vacuum every single day, hair shows up in random places (like the fridge...). It's just a hassle. So pick carefully.
