Sorry guys, the original thread is getting a bit long in the tooth and since this is a new year why not a new thread?

Bit if a breakdown after watching the spring game this weekend and some encouraging signs.....

Whipple is hands down the most important acquisition this off season. Granted you need talented players, but it is nice to have a real offensive coordinator with a plan and some imagination. A rundown on things I noticed from the offense during the spring game....

Also keep in mind Randy Shannon and others said after the spring game we only saw about 25% of the offense....

    1. Most of our offensive plays were run out of the I, offset I, shotgun 3 WR, and shotgun w/2 RB and 2 WR. Whipple's offense is predicated on running many plays out of a few formations...

The RB and FB were also used extensively in the passing game and there was even a play with two FBs in the I formation with Patrick Hill in at the TB slot...

    2. I thought the OL played pretty well especially in the run game and were really trying to impose their will on the defensive front 7. The OL we have now is pretty big and we have more maulers than finesse blockers.... Whipple is playing to their strengths with the offensive play calling..

    3. Taylor Cook looked much better at QB and my money is on him to backup Jacory. He looked a lot more comfortable back there and he has the strongest arm on the team...

    4. Mike James continues to impress at the TB spot and word is once he gets down his blocking assignments the starters spot is all but his. Lets see if Baby J or Lamar Miller has anything to say about that....

    5. Damien Berry was the surprise of the spring game at TB and really hit holes hard and ran with authority...

    6. Laron Byrd is shaping out to be the leader of the WR corps, Jacory likes to throw the jump ball up to the big fella to go get it.

    7. Houston we have some deep balls...... Finally an Offensive Coordinator that is not afraid to stretch the field. How many of you guys were really sick of the conservative short play calls by Nix the last 2 years? Ugh... made me want to puke... I want an offense that attacks the defense and stretches the field to create angles in the running game and with a semblance of hope that if we get into a 3rd and 10 or 15 situation there is at least some confidence we can convert.

All right, now on to the defense.....

Keep in mind these were the guys who sat out the spring game due to injuries....

RB Javarris James (wrist), RB Lee Chambers (shoulder), OL Joel Figueroa (shoulder), LB Colin McCarthy (shoulder), TE Dedrick Epps (knee), DT Allen Bailey (undisclosed), DE Adewale Ojomo (wrist), DE Eric Moncur (groin), WR Travis Benjamin (knee), CB Brandon McGee (hand) and K Matt Bosher (shoulder).

Moncur, Bailey and Ojomo are 3/4 of the starting defensive line so keep that in mind...

    1. Holy crap Lovett must be teaching the defense to form tackle and wrap up instead of going for a kill shot... Still some poor angles taken by some of the backup LBs, but overall... much better job of tackling and gang tackling IMO...

    2. Overall speed on the defense is much better than the last few years... When you see Marcus Forston chase down and catch Damien Berry on a screen you knows guys are hustling to the ball...

    3. DL and LB have some depth to the units now.... More so on the DL.. there will probably be 5 or 6 guys rotated at the DE spots through the games. Eric Moncur, Adawale Ojomo, Stephen Wesley, Olivier Vernon and Marcus Robinson should all see playing time this year....

    4. DBs are still more of a concern for me than anywhere else on the defense, we really need depth especially at the CB spot. Brandon Harris looks to be our best CB as of right now. The safety position has some depth and I feel pretty comfortable there. Vaughn Telameque should have one safety spot locked down...

    5. There was so much substitution and rotation across the board on defense during the spring game it was a little difficult to get a feel for the LB group especially... thats fine, the more playing time we get these younger guys the better off we will be..

Look for #90 in the dark Jersey in the video below. 1:52 mark he does a nice job of blocking a punt and the kid hustles all the time. As long as he does not grow out of the position I could see him as a Mike linebacker patrolling the middle and working his way through trash, but I dont see him being quick enough to play the Sam.

Heads up, new offer for next years recruiting class.....

    http://rivals100.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=86667&sport=1

Chase Williams, a 6'3" 235 lb thumper from Leesburg (VA) Loudoun County.....

Michael Barrow will be his recruiter... Kid can already bench 365lbs and squat 560lbs as a Junior in High School.....

BTW.... if you are not impressed with the kid already... Just keep in mind he is the son of the Defensive Coordinator for the Redskins...... Gregg Williams....

Between this kid and Jeff Luc who is considered the top prospect for a LB in the State of Florida this year who we are also recruiting very hard I would say we are really looking for bigger, head knocker types as the next great MLB at the U.....

    # 7 Miami 14, Florida State 8 - Miami takes 2 of 3 this weekend

No. 7 UM Uses Long Ball to Take Series Over No. 23 FSU, 14-8

UM's Yasmani Grandal and Harold Martinez combine for 10 RBI
No. 7 Miami Drops Series Opener to No. 23 FSU, 14-4

    April 5, 2009

    Miami 14, FSU 8

    Box Score

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Harold Martinez and Yasmani Grandal each hit grand slam homers and starter Iden Nazario struck out six in six innings of work as No. 7 Miami beat No. 23 Florida State, 14-8, Sunday afternoon in front of 3,209 at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.

The victory secured Miami's (23-8, 10-5 ACC) second straight series win over the Florida State (18-10, 7-6 ACC), after the `Canes took two-of-three from the Seminoles last year in Tallahassee. The 14 runs scored by the `Canes on Sunday was the most UM has put up against FSU since winning 17-11 on April 10, 2004 in Tallahassee.

After FSU plated a run in the top half of the first, the Hurricanes put up five runs in the bottom of the frame and another five in the second to put the game out of reach early on.

Martinez had his best day at the plate as a Hurricane, going 3-for-5 with two homers, a career-high five RBI and two runs scored. Grandal also finished with five RBI, going 1-for-5 with two runs scored. Jason Hagerty (2-for-3, one walk, three runs), Ryan Jackson (2-for-3, one run) and Ted Blackman (2-for-3, two walks, one run) joined Martinez in finishing with multiple hits.

The Hurricanes loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first with two walks and a hit-by-pitch. A fielder's choice grounder to second and an error on FSU shortstop Stephen Cardullo brought Scott Lawson home from third to tie it up at 1-1. With the bases loaded again, Martinez smacked his first of two homers on the day over the wall in left to put the `Canes up four after one.

In the second, Ryan Jackson singled to lead off the inning and after a Nathan Melendres flyout and a Lawson hit-by-pitch, Jason Hagerty doubled home Jackson for the first run of the inning. With runners on second and third, Chris Herrmann drew a four-pitch walk which set up Grandal's grand slam to left, clearing the bases to put the `Canes up 10-1.

The two grand-slam game for Miami was its first since Gaby Sanchez and Joey Hooft accomplished the feat versus Pace University on May 2, 2003.

Nazario (4-0) won for the second consecutive weekend, allowing four runs on five hits while walking five.

FSU starter Mike McGee lasted just 1 1/3 innings, giving seven earned runs on three hits while walking three and striking out one. Geoff Parker, Hunter Scantling, Tyler Everett, Jack Posey and Jimmy Marshall combined to go the rest of the way, allowing a combined six runs on nine hits after McGee exited in the second.

Florida State came back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Tommy Oravetz and Parker Brunelle hit back-to-back triples before Brunelle scored on a wild pitch to cut UM's lead to 10-3.

McGee, who moved into the outfield after being relieved on the mound, hit a solo homer in the sixth but UM came right back with two runs on a Chris Herrmann double in the bottom of the inning to go up 12-4.

FSU added three runs in the seventh and another in the ninth while UM scored two in the seventh - highlighted by Martinez's second homer of the day, a solo shot to right.

Taylor Wulf, Sam Robinson and Travis Miller pitched the final three innings in relief for UM.

McGee finished the day 2-for-5 with two homers, five RBI and two runs scored .

Miami returns to the diamond Tuesday evening when it plays host to FAU at Alex Rodriguez Park. It will be the second of three meetings between the Hurricanes and the Owls. UM won the first match-up, 13-6, in Boca Raton on March 25. Tuesday's game scheduled for 6 p.m.

    Game Notes
    - Harold Martinez and Yasmani each had a grand slam home run. The last time the Hurricanes had two grand slams in a game was May 2, 2003 against Pace University when Gaby Sanchez and Joey Hooft accomplished the feat. Miami has now hit three grand slams as a team this season.
    - Harold Martinez had his first multi-home run game of his career.
    - Harold Martinez and Jason Hagerty both extended their hitting streaks to eight games.
    - The come-from-behind win was Miami's 16th of the season.
    - Miami went to 7-0 in games played on Sunday and 10-0 in day games this season.
    - Miami has scored double-digit runs in three of the seven games Iden Nazario has started. The Hurricanes have also scored at least six runs or more in all games started by Nazario.
-The teams combined for six runs on just one hit in a 37-minute first inning.

    Series Notes
    - Scott Lawson, who came into the series with just two stolen bases, recorded a series-high three steals against Florida State.
    - Miami had committed at least one error in all but six games heading into the weekend. This was the first series this season the Hurricanes went errorless.
    - Harold Martinez had a big weekend at the plate, going 7-for-12 with five runs scored, two doubles, three home runs, six RBI and 18 total bases.
-Jason Hagerty also paced the Hurricanes over the weekend, going 5-for-10 with five runs scored and three RBI.
-Harold Martinez now leads the team with nine multi-RBI games and is tied for the team lead with 10 multi-hit games.
    - Miami won the series despite Florida State scoring first in all three games. Miami has won 16 of their 23 games coming-from-behind.
-The teams combined for 16 home runs over three games. Florida State had 10 homers while Miami recorded six.

By the way, congrats to the Canes baseball boys for winning the State of Florida championship. 3-0 against the Gators and 2-1 against the Seminoles, 1-0 so far against the Owls of FAU, is 6-1 against state schools.

I really like this kids story.... he does not have an offer so he comes to the spring game with his highlight DVD in hand... turns it over to the coaches who after reviewing the film and doing some research offer him a scholarship and he commits on the spot...

Talk about wanting to be a Cane....

When you watch the highlight video keep a close eye on the LT spot... the kid has nice size and pretty quick feet..

BTW, out of our 4 signees for next years class, 2 are OL and 2 are DL.

Dwayne Collins submitting for the draft is like placing Ray Charles in a minefield and asking him to cross by himself..... Not a good idea.

Collins will be back next year if he is smart.... He really needs to be more consistent and actually show up and score in big games.

    http://miami.scout.com/a.z?s=13&p=8&c=1&nid=4166810

Glenn plays both ways but Miami is recruiting him to play OT. If his commit sticks until signing day we have now taken a highly rated OT in Glenn and a highly rated DT in Louis Nix out of the Gators backyard......

So far with our 5 commits 3 are OL and the other 2 are DT........ see a trend developing here...... Shannon and Co are setting up the depth for both front lines nice and early which was sorely needed especially on the OL..

If we can close out with Brandon Linder the top rated C in the state from St Thomas Aquinas and Torrian Wilson the OT from MNW that would chalk up to be one hell of a recruiting class for the OL...... then the coaching staff could focus on CB and S..

Below is a snapshot of our commits to date....

Nice read on Robinson and love the fact that he is already pretty verse with hand fighting which is paramount for a DL. He played OG as well in High School and in his clips looks like a real mauler in the run game...

As a true Freshman if Miller could even come close to having the same type of kickoff return skills as Hester it would be a big help.

You wonder how much Bailey's forty is inflated from different stopwatches used. I can't imagine him running a 4.65 at 290. Then again, it could be true; hell, Julius Peppers ran a 4.55 forty on turf at 6'6" 290 and Mario Williams ran a 4.66 I believe at 295.

Nothing would surprise me with Bailey given his freakish physical traits. Hopefully they will really translate on the field this year..

Kid is the half brother of Philip Buchanan, Randy and the coaching staff still refuse to look at CB recruits under 5'10". Seems like they really loathe short cornerbacks....

I wonder if they plan on playing a lot more press coverage this year?

EDIT: Maybe not. Just saw the weight of the DB.

He is still just a Sr. in High School though, plenty of time to beef up once he gets into the training program and a regular diet regimen.

Regardless of what type of Defense we play, we have to start coming up with more Interceptions and turnovers on Defense. Last year with only 4 interceptions was pitiful.

Very true and agree. I think we lack physicality on defense. Every time I write the word physical describing the Miami Hurricanes, I think of Sean Taylor's hit on the FSU WR in the game in the rain.
