Penne was a good candidate, but Manning deserved it as well. His play the last nine games has just been phenomonal.
Thanks... I wonder if he could have done it without Harrison, Wayne and Clark??? Luckily he had Harrison an 8X Pro-Bowler, and Wayne a 2X Pro-Bowler... at least Chad had who??? Hopefully you can read through my sarcasm...
I have no problem with Manning winning the MVP as he is my favorite player not wearing a Fins uniform. However I have to say I don't think anyone this year could have been more valuable to their team than Pennington. From 1-15 to 11-5 and Pennington was the guy guiding a true no name offense on that field (well except for Brown and Ricky the rest were no names). With Henne or McCown as the QB this team would have been sub .500, although I understand the same could be said of Manning. Manning deserves the trophy but not as much as Pennington because 1-15 to 11-5 is amazing and Pennington was the key part to that record.
If Peyton could give the award to pennington, i bet he would. I'm okay with Manning winning, mainly cause I think sparano will win COTY, and i just can't see the Dolphins sweeping the regular season awards like that.
I just heard this approach on 790. If you were the GM of the Dolphins, and you had to pick a QB for next year, would you pick Peyton or Chad? It should've been a co award in my opinion
Wow. I never thought he'd win, and I never thought he'd have come in second either! I think he deserves it, but I also thought he wouldn't receive the recognition.
He actually tied with Michael Turner for 2nd. It's still very cool. But the voting wasn't close. Peyton Manning - 32 Chad Pennington - 4 Michael Turner - 4 James Harrison - 3 Adrian Peterson - 3 Philip Rivers - 2 Kurt Warner - 1 Chris Johnson - 1 Can't be unhappy with Manning. The team around him isn't nearly as good as it has been in past years. Not even the receivers.
I thought Rivers had a better season than Manning. Without Rivers the Chargers win 4 games this season. Can't believe he didn't even make the Pro Bowl. Also Brees had a brilliant year, over 5000 yards and around 34 TDs while missing Bush, Colston and Shockey for a lot of the year.
Yup. I pretty much 110% agree here. Anyone would EXPECT manning to do what he did to end out the season with the colts. Nobody expected Pennington to with our surrounding cast. All the more reasons that Pennington's play was much more valuable to our team than Manning's was. Thats just my opinion though
Good point. Brees is another who you could argue for. Just hard for teams that don't make the playoffs to garner MVP-candidate discussion.
Yep, for me it's a stupid assumption that your team has to make the playoffs to be considered for MVP. Don't get me wrong, Manning played well but I don't think it was spectacular, the type of season he had is to be expected from him really. I guess it's because he's that good that you take it for granted that he'll get around 4000 yards and around 30 TD's. Comparing Brees' season to Manning's it's clear that Brees had the far better year. Nearly 1 yard per pass attempt more, 1000 yards more on the season, 7 more TD's (although 5 more Ints) and the #1 scoring offense in the league while throwing for a lot of the season to Lance Moore, Devery Henderson and Billy Miller with Pierre Thomas running the ball. That cast doesn't compare to Harrison/Wayne/Clark and Addai. Look at Rivers as well, 1.2 yards more per pass attempt, 7 more TD's and 1 less Int. On the year Rivers had an amazing 3-1 TD/Int ratio, nearly 8.5 ypa and over 4000 yards, yet he didn't even make the Pro Bowl. Amazing.
I actually agree with this post. Initially, I figured Manning got it because Matt Ryan wasn't available.
Makes you think Marino should've won MVP at least 5 or 6 times eh? I agree. This is expected from Peyton Manning.
Boooring. Chad Pennington is the real league MVP. I like Peyton a lot but Chad did just as much with less.
while I think Chad should have won (or at least made it close) Manning winning this award is like Farve going to the probowl. Media has their fav's and with their help they will win most awards.
Amazing. Chad starts the year competiting with Kellen Clemens for the starting job in New York and ends it 2nd in votes for the MVP voting, Quarterbacking the hated Miami Dolphins to the AFC East Championship with the most wins he's ever had in a season. Un-freaking-believable.
It's rigged. Very hard to believe the lovefest with Peyton.I think his commercials are clever, and he's a great football player. BUT he is not the MVP of the league.Chad and Peyton are both MVP's of their teams. There are way too many intangables that favor Chad over him for this award tho.If they are biased, fine. It's all about the team and winning Sunday.Chad would'nt want it any other way.
Your logic is somewhat flawed to me. His team is only expected to make the playoffs because of him. You take Manning away and they are an average offensive team with a poor defense. You can argue he is more valuable to his team than nearly anyone.
sorry guys, but take off the homer caps for a second. Manning deserved that MVP award. They might have Wayne and Harrison but Harrison was a shell of what he has been and they didn't have a full strength addai. If you watch manning every week you will see why he wins this award. He is the best QB in the league talent wise and execution wise. His intangibles are shown week in and week out. Audibles on the line, reading defenses and picking that perfect play to find the open guys. His leadership is unmeasurable. And imagine Jim Sorgi leading that colts team. I would have loved to see Chad win but you really can't argue with manning...
Let me take off the homer glasses... How would Manning play on a new team where he just came in 3-4 weeks before the start of the season... New players...New coaches, new Offensive gameplan, unknown OL, no elite WRs... Oh and you tell Manning that he is going to be part of a QB competition in camp...where he has to split reps... OK let me put my homer glasses back on...
and let me add this... Was it Chad or Peyton that had 3 games with a QBR of less than 65??? before we blow a few brain cells thinking... Peytons had 2 mediocre (73-74 QBR) games and had 3 (47-59 QBR) terrible ones...I know that you cannot be perfect on every game, but he had over 1/4 of his games this year where he was not the Manning of old... One of the terrible ones (against Cleveland) the team won (10-6) by Defensive Fumble return in the 4th quarter for a TD The game was 3/4 into the season so it was not early in the year... I wonder if Brady, Warner, Eli, Palmer, Delhome would have done as well with the same team??? Homer glasses back on...
I can understand the argument for Pennington being the MVP this year, but it's almost as if you're arguing Pennington's also the better QB with this post ...
I think what he means is that Pennington had a better year based on the situation he was in. He stated how Pennington had to get used to this team in a very short amount of time, whereas Manning has had everyone around him for a very long time, even though Addai was hurt on and off along with Harrison. Pennington had a helluva year, just like Manning, but with the situation Pennington was in, made him more deserving for the M.V.P. award. Not trying to put words in anyones mouth**
Your logic is flawed to me. You think New Orleans wins 8 games without Brees throwing for over 5000 yards? He was 16 yards short of Marino's record while throwing for most of the season to Lance Moore and Devery Henderson. Everyone knew the Saints were throwing the ball but no one could stop them. The Colts defense was pretty good this year actually. 7th in points allowed, 11th in total yards, 9th in rushing yards allowed and 6th in passing yards per game. That is a good defense anyway you look at it. Compare it to what the Saints had. If the Saints defense had the same kind of season that the Colts had (18.9 ppg) then the Saints win probably 12-13 games this year and Brees is MVP by a landslide. I think people are forgetting just what an accomplishment Brees had this year. Only the 2nd man every to go over 5000 yards, his season is one of the best ever by a QB. Meanwhile, statistically Manning just had his worse year in the last 6 yet he wins MVP. If he's not called Manning, he doesn't win it this year, no way, no how.
It's not flawed, to me if you don't make the playoffs you can't be the most valuable to your team. Even if they had lost you, you wouldn't have suffered. As for defense, those are just numbers. They had some good games, but as a whole they are not a top 10 defense. Put Pennington on the Colts and I don't believe they are any better of a team, in fact they might not even make the playoffs. Put Manning in Miami and we're most likely STILL 11-5 and possibly better. Peyton does so many things that stats don't give him credit for. He's pretty much an offensive coordinator on the field.
