For the first time in 30 seasons, the Dolphins have drafted a quarterback in the first round.
That quarterback is Ryan Tannehill, the senior out of Texans A&M.
After having their emotions toyed with the Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn, many Dolphins fans got who they wanted. As did offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, who was Tannehill’s head coach at A&M.
While the terminology might not be identical, Tannehill will be quite familiar with the Dolphins new offense. Tannehill started for two seasons for the Aggies after playing two seasons as a receiver.
Tannehill spent that time at receiver for the sake of the team. According to general manager Jeff Ireland, he asked Tannehill — in front of Sherman — whether it was a mistake not to play him at quarterback sooner. Sherman’s pupil told them both he felt he should have started as a freshman. Highly competitive kid.
Indeed, the 23-year old wants to be in the mix, though he’ll probably have to wait a little while once again. But they have high hopes for him. Ireland felt that Tannehill was a first round talent based on his junior tape.
Per Ireland, the Dolphins have following this kid for quite awhile. He explained that it was an “all-in” decision, with the coaches and scouts (and owner Stephen Ross of course) in full agreement on this pick.
Tannehill, 23, stands 6-4 and 221 pounds. A biology major (and graduate) who aspired to be an orthopedic surgeon, he is highly intelligent, highly athletic and possess a big arm. According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, Ireland rated Tannehill as one of the top five quarterbacks to come out in the last five years from a combination arm talent/athleticism standpoint.
He is tailor made for the west coast offense. And it will very much be the offense he ran at A&M for Sherman.
Remember how much was made of having someone to teach the new offense during the Flynn flirtation? We’ve got one of those now. And if you watched his Camp Gruden episode, you saw Tannehill actually demonstrating for the receivers how routes are supposed to be run. Gruden noted just how rare that is.
The Dolphins get that too.
He may be special. He may never pan out. Only time will tell. But as the great Greg Cosell tweeted tonight, “If Tannehill becomes the 10th best QB in the NFL, the pick is worth it. You have no chance [without] a QB. Who’s the 10th best QB now? Think about it.”
For the first time in a long time, the Dolphins are taking a shot at it.
