The Miami Herald’s Jeff Darlington reports the Miami Dolphins have reached an agreement with free agent linebacker Karlos Dansby.
Dansby will sign a 5-year, $43 million contract on Saturday that includes $22 million guaranteed. He will earn $9 million per year for the first three years of the deal and is now the NFL’s third-highest paid linebacker.
Dansby, 28, arrived in Davie on Friday with agent Todd France, who also represents running back Ronnie Brown, for his first official visit as an unrestricted free agent. Long considered to be a target for Miami, the Dolphins undoubtedly rolled out the red carpet for the 6-year veteran from Auburn.
The Washington Redskins, who Dansby said were “absolutely” on his list of visits, were believed to be the biggest competitor for Dansby’s services. But the Dolphins were determined not to let the 6-4, 250-pound ‘backer out of their grasp.
The agreement comes on the same day the Dolphins released linebackers Joey Porter and Akin Ayodele. As it stands tonight, Dansby would seem to take Ayodele’s place at weak-inside linebacker. And the Dolphins did place a $1.1 million tender on reserve outside linebacker Quentin Moses. However, the Dolphins reportedly view Dansby just as favorably at the strong-outside position, which was filled last season by free agent Jason Taylor.
With that in mind, we may not know where Dansby ultimately spends his time on first and second downs until after the draft.
Noteworthy: Dansby (Class of 2004) rejoins Auburn teammates Brown (’05) and Reggie Torbor (’04) on the roster. Dansby was a 2x first-team All-American at strongside linebacker, while Torbor earned second-team All-SEC honors as a senior right defensive end.
