This is it, Dolphin fans.
The 2009 season is coming to a close unfortunately. The Dolphins (7-8) have been all but eliminated from playoff contention. So today is a “pride” game.
It is also a “jobs” game, as players such as linebacker Joey Porter, wide receiver Ted Ginn, Jr., tight end Anthony Fasano and cornerback Nate Jones are either on the bubble or have expiring contracts. Their performance today could help determine whether they don the aqua and orange, or perhaps the size of their next contract elsewhere.
The Dolphins are riding a 2-game losing streak, falling short late against the Titans and Texans after falling behind big in the first halves. Miami needs a win today to finish the decade at .500. The Dolphins are 79-80 (1-3 playoffs) in the ’00s.
This season’s final opponent, the defending NFL champion Pittsburgh Steelers (8-7), are still in the hunt and need to win this game (plus get a little help) to reach the postseason.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has thrown for a career-high 4,108 yards this season, including a career-high 503 two weeks ago against Green Bay.
Safety Troy Polamalu‘s season-long knee injury will indeed keep him out of today’s game. The All-Pro had targeted the season finale to return to the field.
