The Miami Dolphins signed running back Tristan Davis to the practice squad on Monday.
The 5-9, 212-pound rookie spent the first eight weeks of the season on the Detroit Lions practice squad before being released on Oct. 30.
Primarily a special teamer in college, Davis only had 21 offensive touches during his entire career at Auburn while leading the SEC in kickoff return average (27.0) in 2006. He also saw time at safety.
Following that promising 2006 season, Davis struggled to stay healthy, missing four games to start the 2007 season (toe), followed by another six after injuring his foot in his first game back.
Davis bounced back in 2008, averaging 27.4 yards on 28 kickoffs, two of which went for touchdowns. He ran a 4.38 40-yard dash at his Pro Day last March, along with a 31″ vertical, a 9’9″ broad jump and 18 reps of 225 pounds on the bench.
The signings of Davis and current fourth-string running back Kory Sheets indicate that the Dolphins are still trying to fill the void left by Patrick Cobbs, who sustained a torn ACL on Oct. 12. In addition to being a standout special teamer and change-of-pace running back, Cobbs was an important cog in the team’s Wildcat offense, which has become less and less effective since his departure. Both players are of similar stature to Cobbs, who stands 5-8 and 205 pounds.
Davis, who had a tryout with the Phins last Wednesday, fills the vacancy left by the promotion of linebacker J.D. Folsom to the active roster last Saturday. [Source]
