The Miami Dolphins signed linebacker J.D. Folsom off their practice squad Saturday evening and waived inside linebacker William Kershaw.
The team’s final pick in this year’s draft out of Weber State, Folsom becomes the team’s first reserve at inside linebacker for today’s divisional contest at New England. The Dolphins have confirmed that starter Channing Crowder (shoulder) will miss his second consecutive game. Fellow starter Akin Ayodele will slide over to Crowder’s strong inside position in the Dolphins’ 3-4 defense, while veteran Reggie Torbor will replace Ayodele on the weakside.
The move was likely precipitated by the opponent, as Folsom — 6-3, 230 — is a bit faster than 6-3, 250-pound Kershaw and likely better equipped to defense New England’s spread offense.
Nose tackle Jason Ferguson (elbow) has also been scratched from today’s game at New England. Third-year man Paul Soliai, who is playing the best football of his career, will start in his place. Defensive ends Randy Starks and Tony McDaniel would relieve him in base 3-4 alignments. As a result, second-year defensive end Lionel Dotson should be active for the first time this season.
The Dolphins will likely opt for nickel, dime and the occasional 3-3-5 alignment to combat the Patriots multi-WR system. Strong safety Yeremiah Bell becomes essentially a linebacker in nickel and 3-3-5 sets, with Tyrone Culver and now rookie Chris Clemons taking his place alongside free safety Gibril Wilson.
